Art Film Moment: Love as a Wheel

This short art film was created by a group of seeming McKibbinites for the 48-Hour Film Project. Enjoy.

Introducing: Ear to the Street

You might have noticed the new module at the bottom of the “latest” column — that’s Ear to the Street, a database of quotes overheard in Bushwick. You know you have heard the most ridiculous hipster say the most idiotic thing. You’ve seen mothers use “fuck” 5 different ways in one sentence directed at their 5-year-old kids. Anything funny, crazy, stupid, silly, or ironic that you’ve heard in the hood, you can add to the database and it will be randomly served to the field below right.

Have fun!

Add to Ear to the Street here, or by clicking the header above the quotes.

Godwin’s Law in Three…Two…: Gothamist does a blurb on Northeast Kingdom — and the commenters basically accuse NEK and all of us who eat there of racism.

Welcome to the Hood: The briefest, least-capitalized Bushwick primer ever.

Enough Already: *mocking voice* “Bushwick — pardon us, East Williamsburg…” Will this gag never end? It’s embarrassing that anyone thinks they’re being clever anymore. Anyway, boo-hoo, rich bitch 20-something media assistants are treated poorly at work.

Good News for the Birds: Seems the City has rejected the Parks Dept’s contract to develop Ridgewood Reservoir into ballfields.

Bushwick Cooks: Introducing Chef Paige!

It’s time to get this section of the blog rolling again, considering the lasting success of the pastelón entry from back in February. Well, it’s summer now, new produce is in season, wine shops have opened, organic milk is flowing from the shelves of the local supermarket, and I’ve just recruited the most adorable and talented chef extraordinarie, Paige “100 quiches and counting” Newman! Paige will be sharing bi-weekly recipes, complete with photos, shopping tips, chopping tips, and feedback from lucky tasters (me). I recently interviewed Paige about what makes her uniquely qualified to contribute to this esteemed culinary digest:

Morgan Avenue ‘L’ Mosaic Gets Looted?

Whoa. Did this girl remove one of the column mosaics from the Morgan Avenue ‘L’ station — and post the carefully arranged evidence to an online, public photo album? I mean, it’s not exactly a Kanakaria mosaic but it’s still some pretty significant vandalism of a historic facility. …though it would be cool to have subway sign mosaics as a kitchen backsplash. Hmmm…

CORRECTION AND APOLOGY: It turns out that no, the photographer did NOT take this mosaic, but merely took a photo of a worker replacing an old one. In my rush to put up interesting content, I slandered an innocent person. I’m sorry.

Bushwick Culture Clicks: 6/27/08

The talent and flavor of Brooklyn. Mural project launches in Bushwick sponsored by Make the Road. Brooklyn street artists teach the art of mural painting to local teenagers, who then carry out well-planned public art works. Sounds good to me.

No one wishes they lived in Bushwick. Or do they? Indie-superstar in waiting and actress of Juno semi-fame bemoans her high West Village rent to NY mag and wants to make a trade for a $650 dollar room in Bushwick. First of all, what’s one of those? Second of all, a commenter questions the logic.

Migratory teenage (fake) punks thoroughly disapprove of Bushwick. Excited by the prospect of a free punk show at the Wreck Room, seven kids make the trek from St. Marks to Flushing (trailed by a NY Mag reporter — cool!), and their hearts sink into their stomachs as they see the place is lined with “hipsters, the current incarnation of yuppie scum” and the band is a bunch “of paunchy guys in their forties flopping around.” Comments launch (fake) preps vs. punks war.

You can’t mosh to this either, but…Mesmerizing video just posted of Suite Unraveling’s performance at Monduna.

Five year olds discuss Bushwick, their mommies, and “silly poor kids and their tripe.” I teach five year olds for a living, I’d recognize their limit-testing, attention-seeking banter anywhere. But who taught them to post on Williamsboard?

342 Eldert Update: Big

I was at a friend’s place this morning on Covert and Irving, and from his roof I could see the progress at the rental building at 342 Eldert — it has indeed risen to 4 stories, and seems to be sporting over 40 units. Looks like they will have balconies. Packin’ em in!

The Greening of Wyckoff Avenue

On the way back from Caffe Europa, where Jessica and I sat with a gaggle of old Italian men and watched a bit of the Germany-Turkey soccer match, we noticed these freshly cut and planted tree pits on Wyckoff and Starr. They’re in an odd spot — up close to the property line, to avoid the metal grates from the subway, but we thought it was even odder that there were three in a row, with hardly any pavement left between them. Each pit is also very wide. It’s just a strange configuration.

960 Willoughby ‘Flatiron’ Lot Gets Plywood

I called Kai Construction today to try to find out what exactly is going on at the newly plywooded flatiron lot at 960 Willoughby/1237 Myrtle. As usual, a rude, annoyed, brusque person answered the phone and rushed me to my point. “What do you want to know for?” I explained my purpose, and the woman snapped “Well I imagine it’s an apartment building — I mean, that’s what we do, right?”

Okayyy…do you have any specific info on what kind of building it will be? “No, that’s all the information I can give you on that property.” Thanks.
