 Chillin’ at the park
For the third time, I took my Thursday coffee companion, Mario, around Bushwick. Last year, we had pizza and espresso at Fortunata’s, but on each subsequent Mario visit we have instead had pizza at Roberta’s, his new favorite place, far from Houston Street though it may be. While the coffee at Roberta’s is fine — they use Lavazza from the black can and make it in a “moka” — we were still undercaffeinated after having drunk an entire bottle of wine between us. Yeah it’s only 2pm by this point, so what.

I decided to check out the show at Goodbye Blue Monday last Thursday, since I’d be heading out of town on Friday for the long weekend. I won’t waste time going describing the venue in detail as Jeremy has already written an excellent review, but I will say it’s a pretty damn cool place. We arrived in time to catch the end of the first band’s set. I did not, however, catch their name. Sorry, guys! I didn’t really see enough of this band, so this probably won’t be a very fair review, but it was a pretty self-indulgent brand of jazz. Soon after I arrived they started into some seriously free-form improvisation. Like disassembling the drums and rolling them around on the ground free. Now, this can prove to be cool, but mostly impossible to pull off without losing the audience. These guys took it a bit too seriously for it to work. Like I said though, not a fair review; I didn’t see enough of what they did beforehand to form a real impression.

Dance
5/30 -– Catch 30 (dirty dirty thirty)
Starr Street Projects. 108 Starr Street.
8pm. $10.
Jeff Larson and Andrew Dinwiddie are at it again — bringing their renowned dance series Catch! back to Starr Street Projects for its 30th installment. As a midwest native & big fan of Minneapolis, I’m excited to see some MN folks on the bill. I asked my very talented dancer friend Lydia Bell to give me a professional opinion of some of the performers. She reports that “Christine Elmo is an irresistible performer. Think elf meets tough girl…much preferable to the default zombie persona that pervades contemporary dance. I saw her in Feb in Charlotte Gibbons’ piece at the Kitchen, and more recently at Catch 29. My BF reports that she performed new work recently at Space Space. I wouldn’t miss whatever she cooks up for ‘dirty dirty dirty 30.’” There you have it: sounds great! I caught the last Catch series at BWS featuring Eagle Ager and had my first encounter with Witness Relocation — the whole evening was quite impressive & I highly recommend the series.

$1400 — 2br rr: Beautiful old apartment in a great part of the neighborhood. Has a bay front, original parquet floors with borders, walk-in closet…it says granite countertops but no, it has granite-patterned laminate. That’s okay, this place still passes the quality test.
Halsey? between Irving and Wyckoff Halsey L
$1350 — 1br: I can’t keep track of these little Linden numbers, but another nice, spacious-looking apartment is for rent on this pretty street.
Linden and Central Halsey L Gates JZ/Myrtle-Wyckoff LM
$1450 — 2br: Nice apartment in a decent location. Looks to be renovated and spacious. Needs a paint job.
DeKalb and Central DeKalb L/Central M
Bushwick wannabe: Pulaski is in Bed-Stuy, but as this is on the border at Broadway, it’s not too far a stretch — but Bed-Stuy is not even mentioned. Nice place, though.
from the wtf file: My bro! You want loft? I hev loft! In stonnink gorgeous new construction beautiful! My bro, very cheap! No, is not bunker, why you say that?

Anna and I went to check out the Skaters and others at Silent Barn on Friday. I didn’t know much about any of the bands, except for little excerpts here and there I had read on the internet beforehand which helped me not so much, like this one from the Skaters Last fm station:
“Best described as a the moon-chantings of plains Indians who found accidental gateways to other dimensions in rotted old trees filled with bioluminescent bacteria.”

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
Tell me you love Bushwick. Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings recorded “Tell Me” in early 2007. The video (their latest) was shot in Bushwick and recently posted to “M.I.S.S word on the street.” Their label, Daptone Records, is also Bushwick based, and if you have not heard Budos Band, also with Daptone, do have a listen.
It’s over for us. Gossip girl is getting its very own Bushwick character next season, played by bohemian socialite Arden Wohl. Her character is a video artist, lives in a fabulous converted loft, and gets killed by an L train. Barf. The shows’ handling of Brooklyn is already inconsistent and wrong, so I can’t wait to see how they flub this up.
I’m the one that put the “Range” in the “Rover.” The Bushwick Social Club “jump-off” party came through in the Brooklyn Mint gear. There was break-dancing.
Winner winner, chicken dinner. Two “internet celebrities” present this documentary-comedy on the evils of check-cashing. Shot on location in Bushwick and Carroll Gardens.

Snap! (A Hipster’s Neck With Ease?): You know Bushwick has arrived when Chelsea queens are mentioning our hipsters in a write-up of a Ninth Avenue swimsuit shop. Even if it’s not a flattering mention…
There’s This Thing Called a ‘Map’: Like, Roberta’s is so hard to find cuz it’s like in Bushwick and stuff and it’s like, three trains away or something. Another ditzy glutton complaining about the portions at our venerable pizzeria napoletana.
The OMG-Girl Parade Continues: One former McKibbin resident’s friend defends the lofts’ rep against NYT’s hallway-pissing claims. But she’s cool, srsly — she deigned to find out the “locals” are called Boricuas, or something! OMG her Spain-ish is so good! Ultimately, on a “serious” note, gentrification has nothing to do with hipsters and McKibbin — it’s like, the real estaters fault! Who all operate in a vacuum, cuz they’re teh evil.

Due to a hectic work schedule (and crappy weather!), I wasn’t able to make it out into the neighborhood to find random stylish folks, so I looked in my own apartment. Ever since I’d been given this amazing opportunity to shoot Street Style for BushwickBK, I knew I wanted include my roommate. Hopefully her beauty, wit and excellent sense of style are enough to tide you over until next week.
