If there’s one thing Dan can do, it’s throw a party. Seriously. Looks like quite a line up of entertainment. Can I come next time?
Sadness of just-painted rooms. I love this poem about painting an old room in Bushwick. I have painted so many old rooms. Panic painting an apartment that looks like something died in it. Painting a bathroom navy blue and feeling the walls close in around you. Painting a rock n’ roll studio baby blue and having it look more like you are expecting a baby boy.
We hear Bushwick is still affordable. Alright people, it’s not actually that hard to move to NY. Not when you have the raw marketable talent of Keith from Project Runway! I have to say though, his featured design looks like it could be in the window at Joyce Leslie.
Inspiring spaces. I love that old blue filing cabinet. I just got something similar from the junk shop on Starr. This space makes me want to make pretty things.
Coming soon to a theater near you. A preview of what’s to come this weekend at Cinema 16 at Starr Space on the Williamsburg is Dead blog.
It’s time to get this section of the blog rolling again, considering the lasting success of the pastelón entry from back in February. Well, it’s summer now, new produce is in season, wine shops have opened, organic milk is flowing from the shelves of the local supermarket, and I’ve just recruited the most adorable and talented chef extraordinarie, Paige “100 quiches and counting” Newman! Paige will be sharing bi-weekly recipes, complete with photos, shopping tips, chopping tips, and feedback from lucky tasters (me). I recently interviewed Paige about what makes her uniquely qualified to contribute to this esteemed culinary digest:
Local band Pass Kontrol opened the doors of the Smooth Tony D Studios on Saturday and offered to make any visitor a certified hit maker. This is the way it worked:
1. Visitors could choose from one of three instrumental Pass Kontrol tracks to back their improvised singing, playing, clapping, stomping, screaming, and so forth.
2. Practice a few times if necessary, live with the band, or solo on the i pod.
3. Sign a “professional contract.”
4. Step up to the microphone, Korg Vocoder, Keyboard, and/or tambourine, press “record,” cut a hit, and leave with a CD of their song!
What we heard: Screaming rock vocals, classical violin, odes to new bicycles, improvised duets, noise rock, and sultry blues harmonica from a talented neighbor (above video). It was a truly collaborative experience.
Domingo, Locked Up on Jueves: I’m amused all around by this story of a “squatter” tossing a stroller through a window after telling his landlord he’d never pay to live there… though I guess the building is good enough to live in for free.
Hello Bushwickians…Bushwickers….do we have a name? Well, I do, and its Matt. I am the latest addition to the BushwickBK.com stable of bloggers, and I wanted to take a quick second of your day to introduce myself. I am 23 years old and recently moved to Bushwick with my boyfriend. We came from Arizona via Connecticut, which is a story in and of itself, but suffice it to say we’re happy to be here and we’re loving Bushwick! A little bit about myself - I am currently unemployed (hoping to change that in the next few days), I love to read, cook, and blog, I enjoy walking my dog in Maria Hernandez Park and practicing my Spanish with the nice girl at the Panaderia on the corner of Starr and Knickerbocker, and one time I almost got stabbed by a guy with a broken Corona bottle in Ecuador.
I plan on focusing my posts on the culinary side of Bushwick, so you can expect things like restaurant and grocery shop reviews, farmer’s market reports, and the like. I’ll also keep an eye on whats happening at Maria Hernandez Park. If there is anything going on that you would like to see covered here on BushwickBK.com but are too lazy to do it yourself, just let me know!
Hi everyone, I wanted to briefly introduce myself as a new poster on this fine blog. Jeremy has been kind enough to bring me on board, and I’ll be posting on a fairly regular basis on topics relating to Bushwick and East Williamsburg.
A little about myself: I write, mostly on literature and education, for The Village Voice, The New Republic Online, Salon, and The New Criterion. Though I am a native of St. Petersburg (Russia, not Florida), my adopted home is New York, and I am going to be posting some on the fascinating history of Bushwick and Williamsburg — as Jeremy has already done on many occasions.
I also teach at The Brooklyn Latin School, a new selective high school that sits at the quite loud intersection of Bushwick Avenue and McKibbin Street. This is technically East Williamsburg, but my school is very much tied to the surrounding area, including Bushwick, and I’ll try to tackle some educational issues without sounding preachy or self-righteous.
Anyway, that’s all for now. I look forward to my first venture into blogging and hope that you enjoy reading my posts.
Bear with me while I reacclimate from sand, surf, and Cuban sandwiches to grafitti, razor wire, and native English spakers with grammar worse than a Marielito. I’ll be posting again soon, probably tomorrow.
