Bushwick House of the Week: 1117 Jefferson Av

1117 Jefferson Avenue is one of those homes in this area which kept its second-floor entrance, instead of chopping it off and having the entrance on the garden level. Inside, there are some modern touches but built-ins and some other details seem to have been left intact. This property is listed as a single family but the records show it as a legal three-family — I don’t know if this is just poorly described by the agent or it’s actually been turned into an eight-bedroom home for one family. Either way, it’s a great deal by square footage, and it’s on one of those shady tree-lined blocks off of historic Bushwick Avenue.

Bushwick House of the Week: 1372 Madison

1372 Madison is a pretty little two-family on a cute, leafy block right near the imposing gothic Bushwick High. I believe the reason this block and the one next to it are so short — about half a normal block — is that the Long Island Railroad Ridgewood Depot once stood across Ridgewood Place. It has an “accessory unit” *wink* in the basement, like almost every house in Brooklyn. I’m surprised this is a short sale at this price — someone definitely got in way over his head. It’s still a huge house for $540K, and in a very convenient location for commuting.

Bushwick House of the Week: 1330 Decatur

1330 Decatur Street is another beautiful example of the blocks of bow- and bay-front brick housing on Bushwick’s south end. There are unfortunately no photos for us to see how it looks inside. Considering the price per square foot, it’s not likely this place is pristine, but it’s also probably not destroyed. There’s not much to do on this end of the hood, but it’s a mere two-minute walk to the Wilson L stop so you can flee the area when you need to do something fun. The location keeps it cheap.

Bushwick House of the Week: 86 Cooper

86 Cooper is a completely trashed two-family at the far end of Bushwick. The block itself is actually quite leafy and somewhat well-kept, and pretty convenient to both the L and J subway lines. If you have the know-how and extra scratch to fix a place up, you could unlock a bit of equity from this cute little house that’s just down on its luck. The price is certainly right.

Bushwick House of the Week: 244 Covert

244 Covert is a clean-looking two-family on a street with only fleeting bits of remaining architectural interest. But the block has a quaint, neighborhoody feel thanks to the mature trees lining its entire length. The location is convenient to recently revamped Irving Square Park and the Halsey and Wilson L stations are equidistant. Unfortunately, there are no interior photos, but the description assures us it’s in “excellente condition.” There is some new residential development nearby and lots of architectural diversity in the surrounding blocks. Irving Square is sure to be a future hot spot for homebuyers looking for history.

Bushwick House of the Week: 403 Grove

403 Grove is a cute little white brick house just off Wyckoff Avenue in what some people still seem to call Wyckoff Heights, after a short-lived attempt in the 80s to “hold the line” against Bushwick’s decay. Either it worked, or there never was much danger — these streets to this day are still mostly well-kept and attractive. Not that you can tell from this Google street view image I yoinked, which is actually better than the nasty one taken by the agent. The interior photos make it seem like the same old lady has lived there for 30 years — which is not a bad thing. It looks like there are a few old details here and there, including beams in the dining room. This could be moved right into with some minor cosmetic work. It’s on a convenient stretch of Wyckoff for buying basics, and some food up on Myrtle, not to mention the Myrtle-Wyckoff L-M hub a couple of short blocks away.

Bushwick House of the Week: 1077 Hancock

1077 Hancock doesn’t have an attractive exterior, but for someone looking to get into a house on the parlor floor, this is awesome, especially considering this has three apartments over an admittedly tight 2000sqft. If you look inside, past the ugly tarpaper “brick” veneer, you can see the house still has a lot of interesting old details, including fireplaces and various moldings. Normally a house in this price range is nearly uninhabitable — this one, while not luxurious, looks like it could be moved right into. The neighborhood is nothing to write home about — it’s row after row of vinyl-sided (or worse) frame houses, but many blocks down this way are lined by large trees that make up for the architectural “problem.” There’s certainly a charm to it.

Bushwick House of the Week: 454 Irving

I thought it would be nice if we started featuring houses once a week. After all, some of us are looking to buy, and it’s interesting to see what’s for sale in the hood.

454 Irving is a beautiful blonde brick, bow-front two-family in one of Bushwick’s best islands of intact housing. This stretch of Irving from Putnam to Weirfield is tree-lined, lightly-trafficked, and full of families. The streets that radiate from Irving in either direction are full of charming and well-kept homes, many with postage-stamp front lawns and original ironwork. While we don’t have any photos of the inside of this house, the outside looks great and the inside is 3300sqft with two apartments: a 2/1 and a 3/1. The back yard is a decent 20×40 — plenty of room for a great garden.
