Bushwick Culture Weekend Picks 11/28/08

YAY — it’s a holiday week!

It seems as though the neighborhood is taking it pretty easy (in my case, I was fed by lovely gourmet friends) and hunkering down here in Bushwick or going to visit family.

What I’m trying to say is: it’s a light Culture weekend.

I’ve tracked down a few things and I invite y’all to post comments with happenings that I’ve missed. (And — as always, please add us to your mailing lists: bushwickarts@gmail.com)

Brrrrr! Ok, so NOW it’s cold. It’ll be a good weekend to rock some layers and brave the wind. Last weekend was pretty awesome — a ton of fabulous happenings all over the ‘wick. This weekend seems pretty promising as well…. no rest for the wicked, kids.

Tonight, increasingly famous Cinema 16 is back at Starr Space featuring Artanker Convoy’s live score to Harry Smith and Robert Enrico’s short films. 3rd Ward debuts Sean Fader’s solo show with complimentary cupcakes by Kumquat Cupcakery and Absinthe Libations by Pernod. Scenesters Columbia and Asa Ransom play Market Hotel and Silent Barn hosts ScrapCycle 2008: a two-floor noise show and one-night exhibition.

Last week at this time I was in Montreal talking to any Canadian strangers I could wrangle about our amazing election — and I’m so glad to be back on my home turf (and still talking about it…)! Congratulations, Arts in Bushwick — BETA Spaces was fabulous last weekend! I hope everyone rested and recovered during the week, because there are some serious rounds to be made this weekend.

When did it become November? After missing all the Halloween fun, I’m back in the borough. And what a great weekend to be back! So many interesting things happening…

Tonight, “The Rusted Ruse Carnivale comes to The Bushwick Starr via a roving caravan of exiled performers from lands and times far, far away. Armed with nothing but a trunk full of dusty costumes and well-used props, the performers create a freak show cabaret, complete with a movement-based repertoire of reality-defying circus acts and tricks, plus a touch of burlesque.” Do check it out. Presented by RedWall Dance Theatre, choreographed by Mary Ann Wall, and featuring The Sideshow Sisters, the “roving caravan” will be in town through Saturday night. Reservations are recommended: redwall.dance.theater@gmail.com.

Halloweeeeeeen! This year on a FRIDAY and a good forecast to boot! What more can a girl ask for? There are tons of amazing options (including plenty of free ones!), so no excuses, team. Grab a wig and get out there.

Tonight get a jump start on the haunting. Video presents a BBQ Bloodfest Movie Night with beer, pumpkin carving, zombification by guest make-up artist and, of course, some artfully curated scary films: Suspiria, Kwaidan, and Freddy vs Jason.

Brr! It’s the time of year to snuggle up all week and bundle up and get out on the weekends. There’s plenty to do and only one week left to get your costumes done … and I know you like to dress up, Bushwick! The culture calendar is filling up with Halloween events, but I have a feeling there are even more out there — send ‘em in and I’ll do a round-up next week.

It’s been a warm week in the midst of a late fall in one wintry economic climate. How are you weathering the season, Bushwick? Seems like the madness isn’t dampening any creative spirits — there’s plenty of arts and culture happening to distract us from the scary news.

It’s a busy fall, folks! I ate at the Kingdom last night for the first time in a little while and was lucky enough to sit next to Christina Medina (famed artist/performer/Anti-Oxidant video salon curator) at the bar for a moment. She was talking about how productive she was feeling with the change of season. It seems like the neighborhood is on board with that notion — there’s a ton of great (and free!) stuff happening this weekend.

Phoning these in yet again this time from Miami! Surprisingly, it feels a lot like Brooklyn of last weekend. In any case, I’m sad to be away again and looking forward to coming home.

Tonight, get all fired up about election ‘08 and head to the Lounge at Northeast Kingdom to watch the VP debate with the cool kids and have a drink or two…. While you’re at it, print out some Palin Bingo cards and go crazy. Who knows what she’ll say next?

Tomorrow night, hit up some theater at Bushwick Starr — the space is hosting a free workshop production of “Gull.” Later on, mosey back to the Kingdom for some Sterolab-inspired jams in the basement by DJ No Good Nick. It’s getting to be that special dancing-in-the-Lounge time of year again.

Saturday, you have some decisions to make…
Choose between: Saturday Night Saloon of serialized plays on Johnson, Extra Life at Silent Barn and Dark Meat, Stars Like Fleas, Fertile Crescent, and Popo at Schmarket Schmotel.

Have a fabulous weekend guys! I’m gonna be missin’ the hood, so let me know what happens.

Movers and shakers not headed out of the hood to spy on the DUMBO Arts Under the Bridge Festival, can enjoy a lovely afternoon coffee followed by a costume change and Bushwick event in the evening.
