Jessica E.Jessica was born in Berlin, and has lived there quite enjoyably on and off. She grew up in DC and has lived in NY the last 10 years, the happiest of which have been in Bushwick. She's a special ed. teacher, works for the city mostly as a therapist for children with Autism, and is starting a clothing line for kids with sensory issues. When not educating/entrepreneuring, Jessica enjoys gardening in her 8X8 foot plot of land, building blogs for local bands, and planning the big "what's next?"

If there’s one thing Dan can do, it’s throw a party. Seriously. Looks like quite a line up of entertainment. Can I come next time?
Sadness of just-painted rooms. I love this poem about painting an old room in Bushwick. I have painted so many old rooms. Panic painting an apartment that looks like something died in it. Painting a bathroom navy blue and feeling the walls close in around you. Painting a rock n’ roll studio baby blue and having it look more like you are expecting a baby boy.
We hear Bushwick is still affordable. Alright people, it’s not actually that hard to move to NY. Not when you have the raw marketable talent of Keith from Project Runway! I have to say though, his featured design looks like it could be in the window at Joyce Leslie.

It’s a typical six-family, on a regular Bushwick block, and not a bar in sight. Or is there? One, two, three, four doorways later, Oliver and I found ourselves in some sort of Bavariawickian paradise. Perhaps because it channels this area’s German past, or maybe because it’s creators bring new meaning to the word detail, the Bushwick Beergarden is extraordinarily authentic, and somehow fits seamlessly into its surroundings.
Jan VanDamme and Paul Nicholson built a Beergarden in their backyard. To document their work, they created an impressive display of the Bushwick Beergarden genesis, including before and after shots, details, materials, and more. Before we crossed the threshold of the final doorway to paradise, Oliver and I marveled over the pictures, and especially the timeline: April 2008 to just a few weeks ago. And I thought I had a productive Spring/Summer.

Bushwick shout outs to Obama. Here, here, and here (meaning me).
Reviving Cinematic History. A review of Cinema 16 at Starr Space as part of the Bushwick Film Festival from the Queens Ledger.
Who is merchandising the hell out of Bushwick on Cafepress! Show yourself! You’re wild! You’ve taken over google searches! Are you making money?
Tales from Bushwick. A series of sorts on YouTube. “About abstract and real: an artist’s life. What and who is a philosopher and a student of sciences? Home schooling by own system.”
 from color me in.
Inspiring spaces. I love that old blue filing cabinet. I just got something similar from the junk shop on Starr. This space makes me want to make pretty things.
Coming soon to a theater near you. A preview of what’s to come this weekend at Cinema 16 at Starr Space on the Williamsburg is Dead blog.
The show I should not have missed. Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings at Summerstage. If you were there, share.

More from this series on the Bushwick Culture photostream.
This past Saturday I invited Anna over for a beer in my newly decked (thank you AB) backyard. As we were enjoying the late summer coolness, and I had just remarked on the lovely pastoral quality of my thigh high corn patch, a rat as big as a granny cat audaciously slithered up the stairs to my kitchen door. Anna screamed like the shower girl from Psycho, but the rat moved not an inch. The night got dirtier from there.

From Daniel Brunet’s photo series on Flickr.
I saw the sign. Bushwick/Berlin local Daniel Brunet’s impressive series of signs and businesses old and new from Grand Street to Flushing Avenue, between Bushwick Avenue and Morgan Avenue. Also interesting, hilarious, and beautiful is his "English in Berlin" series.
Worthy ventures. Those Third Ward boys are good. They are next level entrepreneurs, recently profiled by New York Magazine …the one with Madonna’s scary puffy mug on the cover.

Last Wednesday, I went to the album release party/fundraiser for Welcome to Bushwick - a 14 band compilation produced by Pass Kontrol. I got my hands on a copy about a month ago and it has been on steady rotation on my ipod — especially when I am in any sort of moving vehicle (excellent soundtrack for subway, bus, road trips or just running really fast). The compilation (available for free download in the right sidebar), is hopefully the first of many collaborations between such a wide variety of Bushwick talent. There is talk of an outdoor show this Fall with some of the bands, more hard copies of the CDs to be released, and hopefully some plays and positive response from local radio and even some small labels.

Good Wood opening (Village Voice)
Quite a pool party, but…NYT reports today that as plans for McCarren Pool to convert back to its original purpose, the Open Space Alliance has its sights set on the Bushwick Inlet Park. It’s pretty much North Williamsburg, but close people.
“Bands like these deserve a crowd like that.” Gothamist reviews a Todd P. hot and sweaty show at Market Hotel, after also linking to our very own concerns of an MTV “invasion.”
Bushwick and Chelsea go head to head. Wow. The Village Voice is really promoting our apparent “gallery district” on Flushing. This is the second article in two weeks on the subject.
Fun was had by all. For those of you who could not make it to the album release party of Welcome to Bushwick, a compilation of fourteen local bands, here are some pictures from the event at Northeast Kingdom.

July ends tonight at midnight. August is almost here–that month that feels like one long Sunday evening, because you know that soon, everything is going to get all serious again. Live it up while the days are long and the nights are even longer. Here are some options: feeling like a wild mother-freaking sweat soaked, body slapping, music shouting good ole time? Check out Usaisamonster and others tonight at Chief Mag’s new spot on Broadway, Bodega. Not sweaty enough? The Vivian Girls will be at Silent Barn on Friday night with an impressive line up. Get there before midnight or you won’t get in. Tonight the genius Bushwick marvel duo Jett and Ryan who make up the band Columbia will be at Cake Shop, and so will I. I also personally recommend Bushwick-based angel/singer/songwriter Sharon Van Etten on Sunday also at Cake Shop to make you feel like all is well in the universe because heaven really is a place on earth.

On Saturday night I biked a ridiculously short distance to go check out Monduna at the Bushwick Department of Public Works (right next to the “hep of poop” condo). The Addtract Consortium, a group of creative DIY artists and musicians hosts Monduna regularly, and they showcase bands, sometimes performance art, theater, and more. It’s an impressively well-organized event and space, and free to get in. You buy your drink tickets on your way up, and then exchange them on the roof for way-too-delicious vodka concoctions or micro brews. The view is wonderful of that island-that-is-better-from-afar, and it was nice to get lost in it for a bit when I was worn out by all the shenanigans. The roof is spacious and allows for spreading out, mingling, making out in dark corners, and even climbing and doing cartwheels.
