Life in Bushwick, Brooklyn -- Bushwick blog

Jessica E.

Jessica was born in Berlin, and has lived there quite enjoyably on and off. She grew up in DC and has lived in NY the last 10 years, the happiest of which have been in Bushwick. She's a special ed. teacher, works for the city mostly as a therapist for children with Autism, and is starting a clothing line for kids with sensory issues. When not educating/entrepreneuring, Jessica enjoys gardening in her 8X8 foot plot of land, building blogs for local bands, and planning the big "what's next?"

Tapewriting Televox. A tapewriting installation, part of BETA Spaces by D. Billy in Bushwick.

“I’m going to write a book about all the situations that remind me of awkward high school dances.” It’s practically a book, and a pretty good one — about the Triple Canopy Event at Starr Space, “gazelle syndrome,” and the inability to make friends with girls at parties.

No Age Lands. Impose Magazine reports on No Age and Titus Andronicus at Market Hotel.

Nice to Tweet you. I went to a small business conference this week and I was practically bludgeoned by the Twitter marketing monster.  What are people tweeting about Bushwick? A lot apparently, right now.

The “heprat” and more. New York Shitty shares some photos (like the one above) from their journey through Bushwick BETA Spaces.

“Celebration of Survival.” NYT reviews the Psychic TV show at Club Europa last Sunday.  I was there…it was joyful, spontaneous, and felt pretty legendary.   Local resident and industrial music legend Genesis and the band, now in its third incarnation, came on stage in a swirl of smoke, costumes, projections and makeup. They had fun, so we had fun.

God, I love Islands! See cool photos from the Todd P show at Market Hotel with Islands, Despot, The Forms, taken by Gabi Porter.

Some inspired art from the Morgan L, from ashleigh44’s flickr photostream.

Faces and places. The Brooklyn Ink took some great photos of NY people and places on best election day ever.  ever.

Confusing Article, Wrong Jeans. Look at the person in the picture (pay particular attention to the jean wash).  Then look at the prominently framed L Magazine stand (this is a Time Out Article). First caption: dorky and irrelevant.  Second caption: wrong.  There is so much that is actually cool about this area, I just don’t get it.

Go Dutch! 5 Dutch Days, 5 boroughs!  You know you want to!  Check out the very local happenings at the Onderdonk House, which has been undergoing awesome refurbishment.

Breathing New Life into Forgotten Cinema. Kotori Magazine profiles monthly Cinema 16 at Starr Space.

AC Slater from Bushwick (not Saved by the Bell). UK’s The List interviews Bushwick-based DJ AC Slater–old rave is new again.

Quit school to paint like Picasso. After leaving Bushwick High after just a half semester, Andre Serrano went on to become a highly acclaimed and controversial photographer.  Black Book asks him about his major turning points.

GBM and DGF (damn good films).  A colorful review of one of Bushwick’s most colorful locales from Block Magazine, and a “how-to” look at the Bushwick Film Festival.  (scroll down)

From NYC The Blog

Williamsbushbick. A new guidebook for the less mainstream businesses in NYC seems to place LES, Nolita and Chelsea in Brooklyn. Does it have to be in Brooklyn to qualify as less mainstream or is this just really confusing graphic design?

Nunchucks?  Really? There was mention of this in the forum already, but I need to put it out there.  What  friend of this Village Voice writer needs or would ever use nunchucks anywhere in this city as self-defense, but especially off the Dekalb stop?  Thanks for giving the Bushwick Starr much deserved props, but stop trying to make it sound cooler than it already is by saying “nunchucks.” It does not need your fake street cred.  Thank you.

Bushwick-y and Beautiful. Someone is fancy!  Look who got a write up in the New York Times Home and Garden section! Well deserved.

“Archiculture.” This documentary-in-development’s new “ground zero” a studio in Bushwick. Interesting project.

Destroyed. Off-limits. Inaccessible. A few  compelling images from the Quality of Life exhibition now at Factory Fresh on Flushing.

Haunted Bushwick. A scantily clad, barefoot, disheveled and hysterical female ghost was spotted in Bushwick…in 1894.  Creepy?  Yes.

Yes! I am a long way from home. A new exhibition at a new (to me) gallery space on Melrose.  Complete with blog.

Walter Cronkite interviews local Bushwick band.

New art on Willoughby and Central — photo by Peter from City Noise

Willoughby gets art. Kezam painting on Willoughby and Central Avenues in Bushwick.

Dancing in Hangar B. A dance installation in New York’s first municipal airport.  Jonah Bokaer, founding director of Chez Bushwick, participates in A Dance Charette.

Scene in Bushwick. Gallery scene that is.  The Real Deal profiles our “new frontier.”

Neglected Spaces. New exhibition at Factory Fresh, opening today, focuses on marginalized, forgotten, and neglected spaces (like my closet), as well as the graffiti, garbage, decay and people found within these spaces.

“Somber, but melodic…” The Sky Report gives us a taste of local band Djinn Toys.

Lightning Bolt at the Todd P show under the M Train in Bushwick.  The above and more pictures here.

Surfer Dudes. James Wagner saw them on Bogart across from Grattan.  I saw one running down Broadway by Dekalb.  Where are you coming from and where are you going?

Awesome in Many Ways. Erik Burke, creator of Over Under, the beautiful mural which now graces the once pepto-pink facade of Jeremy’s building, also has the coolest tatoo I have ever seen. I want the legal pad version on my back.

The sounds of Bushwick all at once. Having now moved to nearby Ridgewood, I can laugh more heartily at this.  A week ago this was too much my reality and I may have thrown something large and sharp.

Nanook of New York reviews a hell of a show at the Bushwick Starr the other night.  There were battles, cat suits, invasions, cowboys, cacti, and so much more.  Hard to put into words how symbiotic Pass Kontrol and the Bushwick Starr can be.  Nanook does a good job.

“Our Lies Repeat.” “Recombinatory Poem for Bushwick” is a series of stencils located at the delineated points on the above map. Each is a line from a poem which can be read by anybody, in any order.

Pipes, Bats, Fifkas, Dugouts, Grinders, Water Pipes, and oh so much more. This Bushwick based business just popped up on my radar.  They are “dedicated to the act of smoking,” and “regard the act as an art.”  Much love to fellow entrepreneurs.

“…now its Bushwick, Brooklyn.” Brooklyn-based “Phonograph” talks to a Philly blogger about the ever expanding “town limits” of Williamsburg.

All Purpose Rolling Hipster Thread. This stream of hipster consciousness makes my dizzy and nauseous.  I do believe a new term was coined:  A hipster with Asperger’s Syndrome:  Hipsbergers.
