Manhattan Takes Bushwick: Starr Space hosted Triple Canopy’s Issue #4 launch party, featuring a performance by New Humans and sculptures and installations created specifically for the event. The night also included a performance by the band Orphan, DJ sets by curator/writer Bob Nickas and musician Mark Ibold (Sonic Youth, ex-Pavement). The artwork was by Colby Bird, Jonah Groeneboer, Andres Laracuente, Matthew Lusk, Rachel Owens, John Powers, and Lucy Raven.

Contributors Wanted!

We’re looking to expand our coverage of the neighborhood, and would like to take several new writers on board. We’re especially interested in people willing to contribute regular features to the blog — fashion, architecture, history, food, art, reviews, anything you have an interest in or knack for and are willing to do at regular intervals, whether weekly or monthly. Regular neighborhood observations are encouraged. All authors have profiles which contain a short bio and contact info, and your byline will contain a link to your website, if applicable.

Writers are sought in all parts of Bushwick as well as Ridgewood and much of East Williamsburg (Montrose area).

For stellar and regular (at least twice a week) writers, a small monthly fee may be available, after you prove your value. There is a very limited budget and you may be able to get some of it for your time and trouble. You must have professional skills and need little editing, and come up with your own stories and subjects.

If you just want to submit the odd or even one-time blurb, feel free! All posts must be accompanied by a photo!

Contact info@bushwickbk.com for more info and write@bushwickbk.com to submit writing and talk about contributing. You MUST write reasonably well.

Get Your Photo in the Header!

The main header randomly serves three different photos on the right side (fading out behind the site logo). We’re looking to raise that number to about 10, for variety. We’re looking for photos that define Bushwick in a positive way — a pretty street, men playing dominoes, people shopping at a fruit stand, even an artful flat fix shop. It has to be conducive to being sliced horizontally to fit the header, so make sure to compose your photos accordingly. Please send your submissions for inclusion to write@bushwickbk.com. Links to photos or attachments are fine.

Schvitzing and Sliding: BOS Rocks GBM

It was hotter outside in the back than inside in the middle, but outside in the front had a semi warm (as opposed to sweltering) breeze, so even though it was almost elbow to elbow out there on Broadway with the crowds from both Goodbye Blue Monday and newly opened DIY venue Bodega, that is where I kept running to for relief. The Bushwick Open Studios Music Festival took place over 2 days, at 3 venues, with over 30 Bushwick-based acts. We saw a handful of the 25 that played this Saturday at GBM, but as we were all barely functioning as humans due to the heat, the most we can muster up in retrospect are the following memories:
