House of Yes Is Back!

I went to see my old friend Brian Doherty’s band this past Friday night at the new venue House of Yes. Actually it’s an old venue — its previous space on Troutman caught fire last April — and this is its new location on Maujer St. just off Morgan Ave. (a patch of desolation halfway between NURTUREart and 3rd Ward).

When I arrived at around 10:30, Anya Sapozhnikova and Jordann Baker were taking turns on the silk, doing a mildly burlesque, presumably impromptu, Cirque Du Soleil-style aerial acrobatic performance. They seemed to swim through the air in a mesmerizing and, at moments, breathtaking display that went on for about 30 minutes. My favorite part was when both women ascended the silk together.

House of Yes specializes in this sort of thing, in this sort of setting — edgy industrial warehouse spaces. They are a part of an underground scene that involves Burning Man scenesters, Coney Island freak show performers and Mermaid Parade participants.

After the Fugs-like Banned Rehearsal’s rollicking musical set, I talked for a few minutes with Anya, one of the ringleaders of House of Yes. This intriguing and charismatic personality told me of her group’s ambitious plans, which include cabaret-style aerial theater and acrobatic workshops. I’m not quite sure they are 100% open for business, but they should be very soon. It’s an incredibly groovy space, with a 30-foot high ceiling and a hardcore-looking circus-style scaffolding set up. I’m eager to see what happens here — no doubt it will be impressive. After all, Anya is not just a force behind House of Yes, she’s the director of Lady Circus, and a contributor to the crazy-all-night-party-as-theater collective, The Danger.

See, it would have been fine to have these chicks naked.

I’m always bored by the narcissism. I’ve seen some small circus stuff in Europe that was really incredible acrobats and a really tight show. I hope these guys can get it a little better than what it is.

It was on the block just before Metropolitan. It was in Greater Bushwick (as we like to say around here).
