Bushwick Culture Weekend Picks 11/6/08

When did it become November? After missing all the Halloween fun, I’m back in the borough. And what a great weekend to be back! So many interesting things happening…
Tonight, “The Rusted Ruse Carnivale comes to The Bushwick Starr via a roving caravan of exiled performers from lands and times far, far away. Armed with nothing but a trunk full of dusty costumes and well-used props, the performers create a freak show cabaret, complete with a movement-based repertoire of reality-defying circus acts and tricks, plus a touch of burlesque.” Do check it out. Presented by RedWall Dance Theatre, choreographed by Mary Ann Wall, and featuring The Sideshow Sisters, the “roving caravan” will be in town through Saturday night. Reservations are recommended: redwall.dance.theater@gmail.com.
Friday, check out Dinowalrus, a band with a cool name and an even cooler sound. They’ll be at Silent Barn with The Needy Visions, the Eskalators, a bunch of other acts, and at least one blogger. Put on by sleepwhendeadnyc and showISmonster.
Also Friday is the opening reception for the Present Perfect Continuous group art show at NurtureArt Gallery. Treats, interactive sculpture, and live music by DJ Dolomite. Curated by Denise Wong and featuring artists Andrew Eklund, Sarah Julig, Yasemin Kaçkar-Demirel, Dustin Klare, Elizabeth Knowles, Hilary Lorenz, Nesta Mayo, and Gelah Penn, the show will be on display from November 7th to December 13th.
Saturday night, Todd P throws down a mixed bill with Islands, Takka Takka, and Despot over at the Market Hotel. (or is it at the Harket Motel? The Schmarket Schmotel? You better check all three…)
Sunday it’s time to quit nursing the hangovers you all have from rocking the vote too hard and dust off that political awareness for an hour or two. Head over to 3rd Ward for Moviehouse, featuring two short documentaries on swing states and the death of local industry. Red Blue Roadtrip by Chris Henderson & Graham Meriwether takes a trip through 12 swings states in the 18 days preceding the election, capturing portraits of 18 communities large and small, wealthy and impoverished, rural and urban. And did you ever wonder where your converted warehouse loft came from? In the evening’s second film, Uncertain Industry, filmmakers Daniel Ross and Tom Vigliotta examine the decline of NYC’s manufacturing industry over the past 50 years, and what the accompanying loss of the nearly 90,000 jobs meant for the city’s economy. You can disengage next week.
