Bushwick Culture Weekend Picks 10/23/08

Brr! It’s the time of year to snuggle up all week and bundle up and get out on the weekends. There’s plenty to do and only one week left to get your costumes done … and I know you like to dress up, Bushwick! The culture calendar is filling up with Halloween events, but I have a feeling there are even more out there — send ‘em in and I’ll do a round-up next week.

Friday: Ad Hoc Art presents two openings: group show, In The Language of Angels featuring Camilla d’Errico, Sarah Joncas, Mijn Schatje, Lisa Alisa, Simone Maynard & Mia and in the new project room, a solo show by Logik One. Get your comedy fix without leaving the neighborhood: Jerk Practice sketch comedy troupe “serves up knuckle sandwiches & breaks hearts” at the Wreck Room. Starr Space is once again home to Cinema 16, this installment features three short films by the Brothers Quay with music by Brooklyn-based Darkbloom (and free pilsner). Get going on Halloween a week early at Schmarket Schmotel with first annual Ghostbusters Ball, a benefit dance party for Showpaper with ‘Halloween-y art installations’ by Lara Allen, Eun Young Choi, Fabio Ernesto Corredor, Evie Falci, Ben Furgal, Alessandro Keegan, Hayley Silverman, Adam Shecter and sets by DJ Russula (of Asa Ransom), DJ Dracula, DJ Slate, We vs. The Shark (Nirvana B-sides set) plus dance contest AND costume contest.

Saturday: There’s more art to be had at the inaugural exhibit Inside the Out at the J Vandervoort Werkhaus artist-run space. There’s also good to be done at the all-day People’s Garden fundraiser / hootenanny. Saturday night also brings more music than you can shake a stick at. Panache and Todd P bring a “Not CMJ Party” to Schmarket Schmotel and there’s a full line-up at Silent Barn including Casiotone for the Painfully Alone.

  2. NFK Says:

Toilet records (http://www.toiletrecords.com/) helped put this together and show is a monster (http://myspace.com/showismonster) supplied the bands. Come out and dress up and lets have a dance off!

  3. MooseLamp Says:

Yes, they are! Also, b/c rain is predicted, the times have changed to 3pm to 10 pm, and if it rains all festivities will take place at Goodbye Blue Monday. Check in with mooselamp.net at 10 am Saturday to find out if we’re switching to the rain plan!

Anyone have more information about the Cinema 16 films? Can’t seem to find this listed anyplace else. The last one was really great.

  5. MooseLamp Says:

It’s going to rain, so…Go to Goodbye Blue Monday Saturday to see Josh Ritter, Dawn Landes et.al. perform to help raise money for The People’s Garden!
