Gallery Walk: Power, Currency, and Riot Cops

As noted by the Village Voice, we have quite a burgeoning gallery scene in Bushwick. I took a mini gallery walk down Flushing on possibly the most humid Friday ever to check out openings at Pocket Utopia and Factory Fresh. I was very early to both (just after 6 - not so cool) so I missed the crowds (scroll down) and Kevin reported that they had both quieted down when he went around 9:30.
Pocket Utopia’s current show highlights artists whose process includes: ‘piecing, placing, molding, and making’ in varied mediums ranging from found porcelain plate collages (Dana Gentile) to hand crafted models (Suzanne Walters). The sweet, small space (founded and run by Austin Thomas) is such a lovely place to spend time looking at new work. The show runs through October 12 and there will be a salon on October 11th by Karina Aguilera Skvirsky entitled “Memories of Development.”
Factory Fresh’s current show Power & Currency ‘explores two of mankind’s most consequential and enduring forces.’ The space, as I’ve noted, is extremely impressive and every time I go I get excited about what else could be in store for Flushing Ave. The founders attract the coolest contributors — including style curator and (genius behind the current show) Natalie Kates and her roster of accomplished artists. A highlight for me was PMP’s (the folks behind Ad Hoc Art) silkscreened plexiglass Riot Cop Series in the back of the gallery space. The show runs through October 3.
This Friday the 12th you can take advantage of two more chances to catch illustrious Bushwick art openings: The Language of Angels reception at Ad Hoc Art from 7-10 and (very timely) Politics & Other Diversions opening at NurtureArt from 7-10.

Actually wanted to go to the currency show, being an active numismatist, but I’ve used the term “hipster” too many times and would get struck by lightning.
