Call for Bushwick and Ridgewood Bloggers

I’m only one man, I can’t do it all. If you are a good writer and have interest in blogging on a site that, for various reasons, now has over 400 visitors a day and growing, please send me a sample of your writing (or a link to your current blog) at jeremy .at. redfit .dot. com. I would LOVE for people in South Bushwick (South of Myrtle), Wyckoff Heights, and Ridgewood to contribute news, views, and photos from their neck of the hoods. You will definitely have an audience.

UPDATE 9/3/07: I would also love to have an art and music correspondent, to post a roundup of blog posts about Bushwick art and music as well as to write their own posts about the arty, musicky, and hipstery goings-on in Bushwick.

I’m going to keep bumping this every so often.

Doesn’t Myrtle run north to south, and then areas are either east or west of it?

  2. Jeremy Says:

    Umm, no.

  3. bushwicknative Says:

We always thought of Broadway Bushwick Ave etc as east/west Dekalb Hart Gates North South and Myrtle as cutting a diagonal through all that.

Admittedly these may not be the true directions but that is how people thought of it.

  4. Jeremy Says:

When the streets are all screwy, even geography is a matter of opinion. :-D

Jefferson, Troutman, etc, for me have room to play — if someone said north OF Troutman, I’d consider that toward Flushing, but if they said the north END of Troutman, I’d think toward Ridgewood. But I always think of Broadway and Bushwick Av as N-S, though again there’s room to play but Myrtle? Definitely east to west.

  5. anonymous Says:

it will be harder to get people south of myrtle because that area will be gentrify slower than those closer to hip williamsburg.

maybe that area is considered more bedsty.

  6. anonymous Says:

must be pictures on the blogsite be from a good quality camera or can they just be taken from a camera phone. I think there are more people who would be interested in writing, but the difficulty of taking pictures is harder.

  7. Jeremy Says:

Camera phones are fine, most of them take at 640×480, and I shrink them to 450, so the resolution should be good enough.

  8. Jimmy Legs Says:

i’d like to chip in soon, i’m a little psychically strapped at the moment. but i can provide countless kitten photos!

  9. jenblossom Says:

I’m a little strapped for time between my own two blogs and side freelance projects, so I can’t promise a lot, but I’d be happy to contribute when I can.

  10. Mary Says:

I was hoping Jimmy and Jen would chip in. I enjoy hearing their comments, and think they are great.

I can continue to come up with thought provoking or occassionally annoying question, or topics if that’s okay :-)

  11. Joe Says:

Noticed the blurb on kittens, if anyone wants one, let me know, we have quite the litter in my backyard…

  12. Joe Says:

Now on Ridgewood-Bushwick, you should know that the area around Wyckoff-Mrytle was akin to a local Times Square back in the day, c.1940’s, according to older locals (22 bars between Flushing and Gates Avenues on Wyckoff Ave. alone!). I imagine the good times were tempered when federal agents were canvassing the area for Nazi subversives during WWII since this area was primarily a German neighborhood at the time . Urban legend has it that the crew of a merchant ship was spared certain death when the U-Boat Captain found out that one of the sailors aboard was from Ridgewood…apparently the captain lived here himself for a while.

  13. bushwicknative Says:

Joe I grew up one block north of Wyckoff (St. Nicholas) in the 50s and have no reason to doubt that number. Wycoff was loaded with bars . At Myrtle/Wyckoff under the el was a underground night club called the Rathskeller as I recall.

The large supermarket at Cypress and Palmetto which backed onto St. Nicholas was at one time a boxing arena I have been told. When I lived there it was Dilberts. Not sure whatit is now…

I do recall being able set my watch in the 60’s by a gentleman who would every night at 9 pm walk down Greene Ave. with a procelain pot and return 5 minutes later with the same pot filled with draft beer from a Wyckoff Ave. pub.

  14. Jeremy Says:

I love this stuff. Guys please consider posting about some stuff on the History forum.

  15. Gina Says:

I see this post is almost a month old, but I am moving to the neighborhood tomorrow, south of Myrtle, and would be more than happy to send some things your way from time to time once I get settled in.

  16. Wickster Says:

Gina, what streets are you moving to? Shall we welcome you to the SoBu neighborhood?

Did you find the house of your dreams?

  17. Cindy L Says:

Anyone know if Jen is still around?

    Gina, welcome.

  18. jenblossom Says:

    Cindy L - Jen me?

  19. Cindy L Says:

Yes Jen. I was concerned that we hadn’t heard from you in a while and I enjoy reading your comments and knowing you are around!

  20. jenblossom Says:

Thanks, Cindy - I’m around, was just quiet last week as a result of being sick. :)

  21. Joe Says:

What ever happened to that “Yes,No.Maybe” site on Flushing Avenue?

  22. Dusty McFluff Says:

Hi, I just moved to the neighborhood and would like to contribute. I`m not too computer-savvy but I will try (maybe Jeremy could help me trouble-shoot?) I am writing from the hayloft of a 19th century barn on Stanhope off Evergreen and would like to post some pictures. I have jpegs on my desktop but where do I send them?

  23. True Bklyn Says:

Jeremy please help Dusty post these pictures. Many of us would love to see them, and comment on them! Jimmy Leg’s is also computer saavy and could possibly help. Dusty if you don’t hear from either one of these guys send them a personal email asking for help.

the 19th century barn sounds fascinating!

  24. Martha Says:

    Hi,

I just moved to Bushwick (Schaefer Street)from Cypress Hills and don’t know in which part of Bushwick I am in. Wouldn’t mind to contribute.

  25. Cindy L Says:

Martha, what is your cross street? either way you are in the SoBu section of Bushwick and neighbors with Jimmy Legs.

I never imagined a barn in bushwick Dusty but it sounds way cool.

    Guess Gina disappeared for good.

  26. Martha Says:

Thanks Cindy L. for clearing that up for me. I am between Wilson and Knickerbocker Avenues. Getting of Wilson Avenue on the L, lots of cemeteries.

  27. JimmyLegs Says:

hey Dusty, you can set up a free Flickr site and post your photos there. then send in the link to Jeremy (or post it to the bulletin board). if you need additional help, lemme know: jimmy (at) jimmylegs.com

  28. jenblossom Says:

I’m wondering if we should start a Bushwick.Bk pool in Flickr… just a thought.

  29. Dusty McFluff Says:

Dusty here. I`ve been in touch with Jeremy and am compiling a bunch of photos and info. It`ll take me a few days cause I`m deep in reno (the really Dusty part). Some of the photos will relate to Jeremy`s grapes as we found an old wine press in the basement (the house belonged to an Italian family for at least 40 years).

  30. Dusty McFluff Says:

I just realized my last post is confusing. There is a house on the property and behind it is the barn-stable-carriage house whatever you want to call it.

  31. JimmyLegs Says:

sweet, sounds good. i wasn’t sure if jeremy got back to you or not.

and we might as well set up a buskwickbk flickr pool. oh, i guess we should ask the guy who actually runs the site first! :)

  32. turgan Says:

we need some nudity on this blog.

  33. Roberta Jackson Says:

I have lived in Bushwick for 50 years, raised a family and own homes in the area. There is no Bushwick NOrth, East Williamsburg in Bushwick, and Bushwick South it is just Bushwick. New comers to the area are not Urban pioneers, this is not the wild wild west. This is our home, this is our families. Alot of the oldtimers have a strong history here. We stayed fought, drug dealers, police, and redlining of the area for years. We are teachers, professionals, correction officers, police officers, with Bachelor and Master Degrees. We are Bushwick

  34. Jeremy Says:

Not to diminish your experience here, but…and? The fact remains that no matter what you call it, someone on, say, Eldert is a mile away from me, and I would like someone to write about that part of the hood. Not sure what any of the rest of your rant has to do with this post.

  35. Martha Says:

Newcomers, especially when they’re young, will always redefine the area they live in; it’s difficult to deny them that right.

  36. ironlunch Says:

I moved to the neighborhood this summer (Stockholm & Cypress) and i am interested in contributing food-related posts as I explore restaurants and markets in the area… let me know how to go about this! Some spots I am particularly excited to write about are: Italian bakery on Cypress, Mr. BBQ on Wyckoff, the creperie in Ridgewood…
