Moving Up North, Barn Again

Thinking about Crystal Stilts, by Jason Gaspardi
Last weekend we moved to a new apartment, a few blocks north of our old place. Since we’re now in the very upper reaches of Bushwick, and right around the corner from Silent Barn, we figured there was no reason not to stop by and check out Woods and Vivian Girls on Friday night.
When we got there the Beets were playing. I don’t know why, but I really don’t like the Beets. It’s short, recycled pop-rock, and all that I can think when I see them is that they sound like sloppy Beach Boys. After my third encounter, I’ve affirmed that I’m definitely not into it. I think my roommate, Jason, best summed up the vibe of a Beets show when he asked, “what’s with all the shaking and lurching?" Good question.
But enough Beets bashing, they’re doing their thing. Woods were their normal tippy selves, but with the addition of a new bassist. They were only a three piece the last time I saw them, and I have to say I like the fuller sound. Though, they did devolve into a seriously jam-tastic extended version of one song near the end of their set that completely lost my attention. I suppose sometimes you’ve just gotta play!
Crystal Stilts, with the original Vivian Girls drummer, were pretty good. The singer had sort of a Morrissey thing going on, but more deadpan. I’m listening to them again now, and they definitely still remind me a little of the Smiths. But not in a tired way.
After Crystal Stilts, we decided to take advantage of the shortened distance to home base and escape the Barn’s heat at our place… and ended up just making it an early night. So, I missed out on Vivian Girls. But apparently they have a new drummer? I imagine they were awesome, as usual.

The beets suck, that’s why you don’t like them.
The vivian girls played a very very short set but they were pretty awesome, you should’ve stuck around.

Is there any way to keep updated on where Woods will be playing next? Their myspace is not informative at all!

North and upper, huh? I hate the man who laid out Bushwick’s grid.

The Silent Barn is in Ridgewood, no?

most certainly ridgewood. not bushwick.

yeah, i think it is considered ridgewood. its right on wyckoff, and all the businesses on wyckoff that far east have queens zip codes. we live around the corner on jefferson, and have a brooklyn zip, so i consider us to be in bushwick. anyone who knows more, feel free to share.
