The Greening of Wyckoff Avenue

On the way back from Caffe Europa, where Jessica and I sat with a gaggle of old Italian men and watched a bit of the Germany-Turkey soccer match, we noticed these freshly cut and planted tree pits on Wyckoff and Starr. They’re in an odd spot — up close to the property line, to avoid the metal grates from the subway, but we thought it was even odder that there were three in a row, with hardly any pavement left between them. Each pit is also very wide. It’s just a strange configuration.

which reminds me, if anyone has some empty tree pits in their area that need filling, just submit this online form with the parks department:

Jeremy doesn’t believe me, but I submitted one of these on a Monday, and by Thursday, I had a baby tree planted in front of my building by the parks department. The poor thing has since been pissed on, branches broken off by kids being kids, and was nearly torn to shreds by a bloody meth addict one night…but it’s still nice to have more than one tree on our side of the block.

yeah, jeremy’s theory is that the request was put in by someone else about a year ago for my tree, and that it was just a massive coincidence that it appeared the week i put in the request. either way, it takes a second to fill out the form, and eventually, a tree WILL be planted.

looks like they are finally getting to putting some bricks around my tree. Just this morning. Granted, step one was today by digging up the sides a little bit. Actually getting to the bricks might be ohh, August?

Other random things, sorry to hijack but not worth creating a forum thread. We just had a hummingbird stop in the yard. Cool. We thought it was a bat at first. Go bushwick nature!

Also, the Associated on Knickerbocker is now full-on freaky. They are carrying my friend’s beer, Hebrew and Coney Island Lager in 22 oz bottles, as well as 2 of the Coney freakshow line of beers. sword swallower and albino python. Python is a awesomely weird beer. A white style with fennel and other spices. Yes, I am pimping them. Go buy it so it has to be restocked!

When I was a much younger girl, trees similar to these were planted in the same fashion. Everyone complained because they said the trees would not grow properly, would ruin the foundation of houses, would break up the side walks, etc. Its been about 20 years and some of the trees grew just as the city said they would, other trees HSVE broken the sidewalk and grown to be enormous.

I say all of this to say, the trees do look oddly placed but more than likely, they will be okay where they are.
