Bushwick Culture: Weekend Picks 5/29/08

Dance
5/30 -– Catch 30 (dirty dirty thirty)
Starr Street Projects. 108 Starr Street.
8pm. $10.
Jeff Larson and Andrew Dinwiddie are at it again — bringing their renowned dance series Catch! back to Starr Street Projects for its 30th installment. As a midwest native & big fan of Minneapolis, I’m excited to see some MN folks on the bill. I asked my very talented dancer friend Lydia Bell to give me a professional opinion of some of the performers. She reports that “Christine Elmo is an irresistible performer. Think elf meets tough girl…much preferable to the default zombie persona that pervades contemporary dance. I saw her in Feb in Charlotte Gibbons’ piece at the Kitchen, and more recently at Catch 29. My BF reports that she performed new work recently at Space Space. I wouldn’t miss whatever she cooks up for ‘dirty dirty dirty 30.’” There you have it: sounds great! I caught the last Catch series at BWS featuring Eagle Ager and had my first encounter with Witness Relocation — the whole evening was quite impressive & I highly recommend the series.
Fashion
5/29 — Brooklyn Royalty Video Lookbook Release Party
3rd Ward. 195 Morgan Avenue.
7-11pm. Free.
3rd Ward’s gorgeous gallery is going to be home to what looks like a super fance-a-schmance fashion affair tonight. “Local indie apparel line” Brooklyn Royalty is promoting their new video lookbook and promises lots of fun stuff like: Zipcar sponsored BMW Car Service from the Grand L (weird), free gift bags for the first 100 attendees (great — I collect tote bags), open bar sangria from 7-8 (yay!) music by Frank White & Friends, fun party photographers (hmmmm) and last but not least: ‘tons of fun surprises.’ Hey - why not? I’ma check it.
Music
5/31 — Benefit show for Stairwell Gallery
Harket Motel. 1142 Myrtle Ave.
8pm. $10.
Personal fave venue Harket Motel hosts a benefit for what sounds like a wonderful gallery space in Providence. The lineup includes: Kocho Bi-sexual, Mudboy, USAISAMONSTER, Lucky Dragons, larkin Grimm, Crude Hill, Animental, SHV, & Bernard Herman. Todd P’s weekend bonanza also includes some gems at Silent Barn, including Wham City specials Teeth Mountain (who doesn’t love a little Bmore flavor?) along with O’Death, Soiled Mattresses & the Springs, Quiet Hooves, and Family of Love.
More Music
5/31 — Jamaica Bay Experimental Marshland Restoration Project
W4th Street Subway Station, to Far Rockaway.
1pm. Free.
As my friend Kevin says: this may not be in Bushwick, but Bushwickers might be there. Music on the train….all the way to Jamaica Bay! A very liberal paraphrase: The Beets will begin playing at the W 4th St stop on the platform for the Rockaway (downtown)-bound A Train. As they finish, everyone will get on the last car of the downtown A Train, and head towards Broad Channel. The So So Glos will play on the train as “we party while avoiding cops the entire way.” The Eskalators will finish up the train ride performances and….“Once arriving on Broad Channel, we will parade through this Firefighter Wonderland, and at the end of the island is the long anticipated Jamaica Bay Experimental Marshland Restoration Project, home to many species of birds and marsh wildlife.” Performances include: Radiates, Thompson, Puttin’ On The Ritz, Fiasco, Consider The Source, possible impromptu performances on the beach, and Big A little a and KNYFE HYTS. Wow.

hey, the silent barn show you mention is on Friday not Saturday, and it’s an Entertainment4Every1.net show, not a Todd P show.
Todd P has a different show @ the Silent Barn on Saturday: Carrots, Knyfe Hyts, and Screaming Females.

In the face of East Coast rain storms, the completely ridiculous show has been MOVED.
It is STILL happening. It is STILL FREE. Train show now begins at the JMZ Bowery Station, the festival goes down at GOODBYE BLUE MONDAY in their covered, outdoor junkyard
