Music

5/2 — Vivian Girls with Abe Vigoda, Fiasco, and Woods
The Silent Barn. 915 Wyckoff Ave.

8pm. $tba.

The name “The Vivian Girls” comes from the work of outsider artist Henry Darger. I love the reference, and it works with their choral singing, and matching bangs. They sound quite ethereal, but with a backbeat that promotes foot stomping and dancing. LA foursome Abe Vigoda are self-described as “tropical-pop,” and I’m not sure if they are named after the guy with the eyebrows. Fiasco is a high-school aged punk trio, with crazy in-your-face energy and “orchestrated chaos.” Woods, a band formed at the foot of Bear Mountain, are psychedelic and folksy, saturated with odd studio effects, with lots of open space in their sound. Another superbly curated Todd P evening. (visit: Todd P)

Art Opening and After Party

5/2 — The Threat of Chance
Ad Hoc Art. 49 Bogart Street
.
After Party at Wreck Room. 940 Flushing Ave.
Opening 7-10pm. After party 10pm-4am.

The Threat of Chance art exposition is based on the temptation of possibility. The possibility of change in the face of stagnation, the possibility of hope in desperate times, the possibility of alternative thought and lifestyle in the doldrums of complacency. For this installation a railroad shanty town will be recreated to further emphasis the struggle between hope and despair. Amidst a gallery filled of shacks made with found material and walls decorated with freight trains and decaying industry you will find photographs by boxcar culture enthusiast the Polaroid Kidd. Proletarian signs, flags, prints, and banners from author/activist Josh MacPhee. Interactive sculptures, drawings, paintings and stencils, from graffiti artist Billy Mode, and the sociological display of hand cut stencils by Chris Stain.
(visit: Ad Hoc Art)

Record Release Party

5/3 — Awesome Color
Market Hotel. 1142 Myrtle.
9:30pm. $tba.
Thanks Michiganders, for your thoughtful comments on Bushwick. ANYWAY, they are the power trio who have toured with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and others. This party celebrates the release of their new second full-length release Electric Aborigines produced by legendary Sonic Youth member Thurston Moore on his indie label Ecstatic Peace. They are supposed to be crazy good live, full of raw power and infectious energy. As an aside, I love how their Time Out NY reviewer spends half the paragraph marveling over NOT being able to find fault in their performance or sound. New Yorkers are not happy unless they are being cleverly disparaging. (visit: Awesome Color)

Fiasco is pretty amazing, even more so when you consider that they’re like 16 years old. bass player is steve buscemi’s son! saturday’s market hotel show is especially notable as it signals the return of usaisamonster, also on the bill.

  2. EJCohen Says:

So THAT’S what’s opening in 907 Broadway. That’s, like, the next block over from my building. May check that out after I see Iron Man tonight!
