Hello, Readers
Hi everyone, I wanted to briefly introduce myself as a new poster on this fine blog. Jeremy has been kind enough to bring me on board, and I’ll be posting on a fairly regular basis on topics relating to Bushwick and East Williamsburg.
A little about myself: I write, mostly on literature and education, for The Village Voice, The New Republic Online, Salon, and The New Criterion. Though I am a native of St. Petersburg (Russia, not Florida), my adopted home is New York, and I am going to be posting some on the fascinating history of Bushwick and Williamsburg — as Jeremy has already done on many occasions.
I also teach at The Brooklyn Latin School, a new selective high school that sits at the quite loud intersection of Bushwick Avenue and McKibbin Street. This is technically East Williamsburg, but my school is very much tied to the surrounding area, including Bushwick, and I’ll try to tackle some educational issues without sounding preachy or self-righteous.
Anyway, that’s all for now. I look forward to my first venture into blogging and hope that you enjoy reading my posts.

A big welcome to you. We’re looking forward to great posts, and discussions. The walking tour of Bushwick was great last weekend, and future events would be great. So many of us enjoy reading this blog, and given your experience and dedication to neighborhood it will be great.
What screen name will you be going by, so we know when it’s you writing and when it’s Jeremy, or even Jimmy Legs. They threw us a curve ball last week when Jimmy wrote the real estate round up!

Great to have you. Your insight especially coming from Russia will be interesting to see.
I admire your work as a teacher especially given all the issues with the NYC educational system.

Greetings. Our 8th grader is preparing for the specialized high school test. We are thoroughly impressed with the description of Brooklyn Latin and I was wowed by the teachers and students who promoted the school at the High School Fair last week-end. It would be our first choice of the specialized high schools, but every single person I’ve mentioned the location to has cringed and told us we would be crazy to send our 14-year-old “absent-minded professor” to Bushwick, especially one in a uniform? Has the safety of the students really been a concern? I am hoping people’s perceptions don’t fit the reality. I’ll visit soon.
Thanks,
Anxious mother
