Last month, Jelly NYC, the group that in summers past held the McCarren Park Pool Parties and free shows at the Williamsburg Waterfront, launched their latest summertime initiative: Rock Beach. The plan to bring punk rock to the Rockaways, however, doesn’t seem to have panned out. In the style of last summer’s events, Rock Beach has been rebranded Rock Yard and moved to the Morgan. Queens’ loss is Morgantown’s gain.
The next Rock Yard is this Sunday and features a stellar line-up of brash and loud bands. There are a few favorites we’ve mentioned before: Japanther, the Death Set, Cerebral Ballzy, and, of course, the So So Glos. Also playing are CSC Funk Band, whose Latin influenced horns and summertime vibes really would have been great on a beach setting. The show will be headlined by alt-country band the Growlers. The show is free, and the L train is running properly this weekend.

Uh, Rock Beach wasn’t actually in the Rockaways (Queens), it was at Floyd Bennett Field (Brooklyn). One of the things everyone made fun of Jelly about was that they couldn’t read a map and kept saying it was in the “Rockaways, Brooklyn.”

I am all for having music in the neighborhood, but the noise level of these local events is OUT OF HAND for residents nearby. Roberta’s Pizza and Bushwick block party’s PA system are completely OVERKILL. To make matters worse, they don’t just play music for a few hours in the evening, they have all day events, blaring music from noon or 2 pm to 10 pm.
It’s really inconsiderate and you can’t even get away from it with your windows closed and AC on. The bass rattles everything in our loft across the street. Now with Jelly events on the other end of the block, they are BOTH blaring so you are stuck with a mash up.
I would love to know if anyone else in our neighborhood thinks eight hours every Sunday is unwelcome air pollution? I’d like to hear music in my own house or be outside without my head throbbing.
Seriously, I can’t believe these events need to be so loud. They could play at half the volume and still be enjoyable to those attending. Clearly they know nothing about keeping sound appropriate for the space/number of people.
If Jelly events are going to coincide something has to give. Roberta’s already acts like they own the neighborhood. We’ve actually started boycotting their food because they are so obnoxious. I have a theory it’s not even people in the neighborhood at the events.
I think its drawing a bunch of squares from other places to enjoy their crap DJ who only plays 4 good songs every weekend. The rest sounds like bad 90s dance crap that I hated back then.
Jelly is welcome, I just hope they behave with more class than Roberta’s. Jelly’s event was a more reasonable lenght of time. Roberta’s should take note.

They’re loud, arrogant idiots. And they will win. The hood has turned a nasty corner… Money and “cool” rules… The rest rides the long train to powerless. You can fight if you have the desire to lose to the wave of shit riding our way, or spend long days at the beach, return and deal. But fuck the Morgan. On principal, Piano’s in Bushwick? We don’t want that here.

Far Rockaway? What did Rock Beach have to do with Rockaway??? NY Times and Jelly…Rock Beach was in BROOKLYN. Not that we wanted it in Rockaway…

@ Wick Dweller– we’re not square. We just have a shred of class and don’t impose our crap on everyone else. Only obnoxious jackasses think it’s okay to overhwelm entire city blocks with what they deem as “cool”. These places were not open when we moved in. I think they should get a clue and provide entertainment for people who CHOOSE to be in their space. I’m in my house across the street. Fuck them!

@ Wick Dweller & Robertas– there’s no need to be shitty. Robertas can play music loud enough for their patrons to hear, but at a low enough volume it’s not rattling the neighborhood. I’m SURE people at their event could hear the crap at HALF the volume. It goes on for 10 hours. They should get over themselves.
