Police released surveillance footage of a callous mugger who stole an elderly wheelchair-bound woman’s purse.

According to the NYPD press office, the victim was on Bleecker Street near Wyckoff Avenue around 1PM on July 20th when a man snatched the purse from the victim’s lap. The mugger, who was captured on two separate surveillance cameras, is shown watching the woman near the corner of Wyckoff Avenue before walking in front of her down Bleecker, then turning around and snatching her purse as he runs back to Wyckoff.

The suspect is described as a white male about 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, and wearing a gray shirt and dark shorts with a stripe. In the video, he has longish blonde hair.

Miguel Silva has lived on the corner Bleecker and Wyckoff for nearly two decades and says this type of crime is unprecedented there. “For two or three dollars these people are capable of doing anything to you. I have lived here 18 years in the same house and have never seen or heard of someone robbing an old woman like that. These people are a different kind of animal.”

Update: NY Times reported the man is identified as 18-year-old Cody Santiago of Grove Street.

Police are asking that anyone with information call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). All calls will be kept confidential.
