UPDATE: July 20
Silent Barn has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to replace stolen and damaged equipment. They are also raising money for extensive renovations to the space, that would bring the venue up to code for fire safety. They are also starting a volunteer list for anyone who would like to help with planning and the more hands-on stages of rebuilding the space.
Silent Barn manager Joe Ahearn told BushwickBK in an email:
“The plan right now is to take these huge set-backs and turn them into an opportunity for The Silent Barn to become better space for artists and musicians than ever before. To this end, we’ve begun a Kickstarter to help with renovations and reclaiming our lost equipment, but we’re also going to need a lot of help that money can’t buy, so if you can lend a hand, or have skills to offer, or just want to be part of the brainstorming process, please join our volunteer group.”
Silent Barn is closed for the foreseeable future while renovations take place. Visit their Facebook page for more information, including new locations for scheduled shows.

Local DIY music venue Silent Barn was robbed over the weekend, sustaining a loss of an estimated $15,000 in audio equipment and personal effects. The venue also saw significant damage, with doors ripped off hinges, furniture shredded, and artwork destroyed.
A statement posted on the Silent Barn Facebook page said the property was accumulated over the course of the last seven years.
It is uncertain when Silent Barn will reopen; check their event listings for any updates about upcoming shows.
Tonight’s scheduled show of Travis Bird, Millions, Human Relief, and Dads Against Vietnam has been moved to Vaudeville Park on Bushwick Avenue.
Tomorrow’s poetry night, Brainbow: A Poemroom, has been moved to Space Palace at 846 Myrtle Avenue.
Thursday’s Eidetic Seeing show with Bellows, , and Black Cosmic Mother has been moved to Shea Stadium.
Saturday’s show with Honor Code is currently canceled, but the promoters are looking for a new venue to host it.
As well as hosting live music, Silent Barn also showcases art installations, houses an extensive zine library, and numerous back issues of Showpaper.
Silent Barn is one of the city’s longest-standing DIY spaces. Founded in 2004, the venue has endured in a climate of increasing hostlity towards similar spaces, and a time when the State Liquor Authority has been cracking down on venues in general — Greenpoint bar Coco66 has been shuttered for operating without a liquor license.
Initial emails to Silent Barn have not yet been answered. We will update as we have more information.
