If there was ever a reason to venture out on a Tuesday night, a good one might be to catch Matt Shadetek‘s first Bushwick performance (as far as anyone can recall). Shadetek, co-founder of the Dutty Artz label and collective, has been integral to bass music in New York since it first started lapping US shores in the mid-aughties. And his name has stayed relevant to most of the splinters that have scattered from that scene’s explosion. While his sound was never totally in line with dubstep, he played an important role in its fringes, both challenging it and embracing it.

Dancehall has long played a inspirational role in Shadetek’s aesthetic and it continues to permeate his sounds as it evolves away from heavier palettes and onto somewhat brighter soundscapes. The track below was first released a couple years ago, but still appears in most of his sets and also still gets most crowds hype. It was part of a mixtape promoting Dutty Artz’s release of the debut album by Jahdan Blakkamoore, a Brooklyn-based Guyanese vocalist. The riddim, “Wonton Garden”, dropped in December on Shadetek’s most recent release, the Dutty House EP.

Shadetek will appear courtesy of Bushwick-dweller Icky Doome, who’ll be throwing the first of a twice-monthy party at Tandem called Quantum Culture. This event will will also feature Jack Inslee and Wreck Tech from Full Service, Skittishly, and Icky in the flesh.

To help warm up for the show, also check Icky Doome’s newest track, “Post Murum“. It’s a new sound for him, moving into solidly electronic territory. There’s still some subtle guitar strings plucking in its depths, and the main synths have a riffish quality to them, but it’s soaked adeptly in atmosphere and effects. The drums are ruthless with driving beats that might alter your state of consciousness and the melodic elements unfold with a rare narrative quality. Hopefully it’s a foreshadowing of the night to come.
