First, a super big congrats to AiB & all of you involved in BOS’11! What a weekend. Personally the brain is still processing, so this week let’s go laid back: no lists, no schedules, and nothing but leisurely fun. Dance parties are big, as are world culture-themed events, workshops, and rooftop BBQs — not to mention the Puerto Rican Day Parade. Here’s to keeping cool!
Tonight
For all you arters & crafters: there’s a very interesting (& free) workshop happening tonight at I.S.347 School of Humanities. Beginning at 6pm, From Artist to Art-preneur will help you turn that passion for art into a sustainable business. Space is limited, so be sure to RSVP.
Brooklyn Fireproof kicks off a new weekend-long event called The Self-Portrait Project Exhibit, with live bands, drinks and “the most compelling self-portraits taken up until this point.”
The always eccentric & fun House of Yes opens at 9pm for The New Oogle Review, a celebration of gypsy traveler music, with promises of “highly unprofessional” surprises from the Lady Circus. I’d love to know what these guys consider highly unprofessional….!
Plus a little more music to choose from: You can Hop Along with the cool kids at Silent Barn, or party all night with juke master DJ Spinn.
Friday
Once Upon A Time in Brooklyn, a series of free events celebrating folklore from around the world, arrives in Bushwick tonight at the Biko Center. The evening uraga (storytelling session) features tales and songs from Belize and Honduras’ Garifuna people, plus a selection of traditional foods to try.
Huggabroomstik, Phosphene, Church Hill Downs, Happy Rappys, and They Would Be Happy People, are all playing Goodbye Blue Monday,
Full Service is at Tandem,
And heavy vinyl selections are playing all night at Beauty Bar BK.
Saturday
Don’t miss the food and history tour of Graham Avenue, starting this Saturday and going through the whole summer!
The Acheron has a double header this evening with an all-ages matinee starting at 5pm, and Hardcore Gig Vol 156 to follow.
Popsicles is throwing a party at Beauty Bar BK: jams from Djs Cobra Krames & Yamez, free entry, and crazy drink specials – all part of the deal.
And I’m having a high school flashback with this one….
Frankie Bones, along with loads of other raving DJs, is part of the double-staged event, Sneaky 2nds, happening over in The Burg at Public Assembly. If you’re looking for a long, sweaty, wild night: here ya go.
Sunday
Bushwick’s annual and unofficial splinter parade, Puerto Rican Day! The main deal is on Fifth Avenue, of course, but the hood is always full of stoop BBQs, cruising, and the one day of the year you see guarachando con banderas en la mano.
It’s Family Strawberry Festival at the Onderdonk House – rain or shine. Go celebrate Flag Day (had no idea) with live music and entertainment, some classic cars on display, and lots of refreshers: strawberry shortcake, pie-eating contents, face-painting & some good ol’ fashioned games. Also tours! It’s a real local gem, and an all around beautiful place to spend an afternoon.
Later on swing by Microscope Gallery and catch a look at opening night of Current Electric, featuring new paintings and videos from Anton Perich.
Monday
Bushwick Home Companion is back! The live radio show, hosted by Pass Kontrol and Dreamtown, is now at the lovely Bushwick Starr. Head over at 7pm for a rooftop picnic, then hang around for some rockin’ live music, prose from Paul Rome, and magic from Mighty Max Dunlop. So fun.
Tuesday
Holla! DJ Pegasus is back at Tandem playing 80s new wave and electro, 90s ballads, party jams, and old school hip hop. Now who can’t get down with that? Shorty Swing My Way starts up at 11pm, yo.
Wednesday
Let’s get smarter! Bushwick Chess Club at Little Skips is here to help.
