A lot of the important names in juke rarely get to travel far from Chicago, where the style is rooted. Because of that, New York doesn’t often get to hear the real thing in a public setting. Brooklyn-based Lit City has been doing their part to change that, and on Thursday they’ll be bringing to Bushwick one of the frontrunners in the genre, DJ Spinn.
As an artist signed to the UK’s Planet Mu label, Spinn is one of the producers who are moving things back at home but also making noise worldwide. (He actually just finished up a European tour alongside DJ Rashad and Chrissy Murderbot.) The event will be held at the Youth Group Gallery, and they’ll be bringing in subwoofers to make sure the 808s are knockin.
Even though it’s been said that you can’t truly experience juke without going to a party in the Chi, watching someone like Spinn play in person here is your next best option. Hearing the selections of somebody deeply involved in the sound since childhood; listening to the way tracks are blended together in a set; and experiencing the subtleties of production revealed by a proper sound system are all necessary elements for a fuller understanding of the culture. Hopefully he’ll lace us with some footwork moves too…
