It’s a big week for celebrating, libations & all around merriment.  Tonight is, of course, Cinco de Mayo (yeah, so, it’s pretty much only acknowledged in the US, who cares), but also on the bill is the Kentucky Derby, a pig roast animalism BBQ, and for something a bit out there, amateur wrestling inside 20 gallons of beans.  That’s some cool shit.  I also want to make sure everyone knows about Trust Art & Factory Fresh’s Bushwick Art Park; read up, learn up, and get involved.

Tonight

The Bushwick Book Club is back at Goodbye Blue Monday. In honor of today’s holiday the theme this month is original songs (and if you want, dinner) inspired by Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate.

Also celebrating is Pine Box Rock Shop, along with Yummy Eats & Verily Baked Goods, with their Feast of Cinco de Mayo.   They’ve put together a special vegan 3 course prix fixe menu and a bunch of very apropos drink specials.  I say go all out & order that Tequila Flight.

Wanna find out how much inebriation affects your brain power, and possibly drink for free?  Then head to Beauty Bar BK for their weekly game: The Fly, Biosphere Trivia & Spelling Ordeal.

Friday

My favorite store has moved!  Let’s go help Better Than Jam celebrate their newer, bigger space for this month’s First Fridays at the Loom.  In addition to great shopping, there’s gonna be lots of art to see, drinks to sip, designers to meet, live music to hear – and it’s all for free.

Swimming Cities Ocean of Blood is hosting quite the hoe down (not literally) today, titled The Seven Commandments of Animalism BBQ & Dance Party.  Get there early-ish and you can catch the live pig roast, robotic petting zoo, lawn chair balloon fights, and a wife-beater wet t-shirt contest.  And the plan for laterz?  An all night dance party with DJs Tinseltown and dirtyfinger, plus a Half Hour of Power open bar beginning at 10pm, which, while I’m not exactly sure what that means, it certainly sounds related to the always fun Power Hour Drinking Game.

Also tonight is the opening for The 3rd Ward Member Group Show.  Just RSVP and the amazing art, live music, and complimentary drinks from Brooklyn Brewery are all yours to enjoy.

Saturday

It’s Kentucky Derby time and Pine Box Rock Shop is all over it.  Beginning in the afternoon, join members of the Kentuckians of New York and get in the spirit with a mint julep and floppy hat (only hat-wearers are eligible for prizes).  Post time for the race is 6:24 pm.

Silent Barn is putting on a real musical extravaganza today.  There’s live performances upstairs, downstairs, on the roof, in the afternoon, late at night…
and some Live Hummus Wrestling.  I’m serious: full & fascinating details here.

There’s an outdoor (alley) jammer beginning 7pm at Brookyn Fireproof, and it’s a BirdDogPromo event so you know it’s gonna kick ass.  Admission is $8 and includes free beer while it lasts.

Shea Stadium hosts OVERNOTOVER, a one-night-only extravaganza of new media performances, culminating in a DJ dance party. Performances go from 9-11pm, dance party til 4am, and tickets are $7 available at the door only.

Sunday

Sorta quiet today, but still lots of live music to choose from, plus if you missed the opening last weekend (& even if you didn’t), those Famous Accountants will be drinking coffee, chatting, and basking in the haunting glow of Matthew Miller’s stunning self portraits.  Swing on by!

Tuesday

Selective Tuesdays heats up Tandem tonight, and Goodbye Blue Monday has Tuesday Teacup Open Mic.  Dance or sing – up to you.

Wednesday

Over on that little island there’s a movie screening for Above Brooklyn, which I’m told features several Bushwick residents and rooftops.  Apparently we have a pigeon breeding community – fascinating.  And worth the ride, I’d say.
