Each week we’ll highlight a different song by a Bushwick band or artist we like. If you would like to have your band’s song considered, you can submit an MP3 here.
In a week when we have all been reminded of our love for the Beastie Boys, it seems appropriate to introduce the Rex Complex. Not that the Bushwick duo are the immediate heirs of the Beasties, but there is something pleasantly familiar in the snarl of their vocals and the post-punk leanings in their arrangements. The use of accordion where synths or guitars could easily fit adds a textural dissonance against the abraisive vocals. They keep the beats pretty simple as individual parts, but with several components layered on one another, there’s less competition for rhythm and more corresponding roles to enrich each other.
You can stream more of the Rex Complex’s Last Call for the END of the World at Young Cub Records.
