When Joy Orbison‘s “Hyph Mngo” first appeared in London in 2009, it contributed to ripples that would help knock people out of genre boats. That was back when people would still categorize music like this – with its airy organ synths and bright colors – as dubstep simply because it came from artists involved in that scene. People soon tried on “post-dubstep” but eventually abandoned the connection pretty thoroughly.
His solidly electronic music is often unteathered to any genre template, trying on new rythms and sounds. But he frequently delves into classic house styles and rave throwbacks. So at one point, you might catch something forward thinking like “BRKLN CLLN” or his Todd Edwards remix. But at others you could hear joyous celebrations of a firm dance culture like his new single on Hotflush Records. And then there’s his upcoming release on Swamp 81, which is a sparse, linear exploration of 808 drums. It’s hard to tell what to expect him to deejay, especially since he’s never performed in the US before.
That will change this weekend however, when he performs under his new moniker, Joy O, at Mister Saturday Night. [UPDATE: This party was originally to be held at 341 Scholes, but has been moved to 12-Turn-13 in Clinton Hill.]
