Each week we’ll highlight a different song by a Bushwick band or artist we like. If you would like to have your band’s song considered, you can submit an MP3 here.
The last few years have seen the music world innundated with covers of Leonard Cohen‘s “Hallelujah,” songs that reference Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” and in general more “Hallelujahs” than your standard Sunday service. So it’s understandable if your first inclination at seeing the song title “Hallelujah” is to cringe.
If No Kill‘s “Hallelujah” is meant to be yet another homage to Mr. Cohen, it doesn’t sound that way. There’s a slight, mid-western/country flavor in the rhythm, but mostly it’s lots of garage rock crash and clang. Noisy, but not indecipherably so. The use of of sleigh bells in lieu of other percussion adds a nice textural dimension. And by all means, the chorus is definitely memorable.
