Well, so far 2011 is pretty darn good (as predicted by moi). My one issue is this weather. It basically blows. I’m experiencing some winter blues and the only thing that seems to help is that old Bushwick magic. The plan is to drink coffee, work out, take vitamins, hit as many local events as possible and keep shoveling the never ending snow.
Tonight
The Loom hosts: The Prism: "An exhibition exploring angels, lights, sounds, and negative and positive space." With bands!
There are a LOT of local music options tonight (as always, of course). Shows at Little Skips, Northeast Kingdom Den, Shea Stadium, Goodbye Blue Monday, Brooklyn Fireproof and Silent Barn, to name a few. (GBM, BFP, Kingdom and Little Skips are freeeeeeee).
Take a quick subway trip to the Lorimer stop to see local genius Mike Visser (aka Springs) play a set at Pete’s Candy Store. He is always always amazing and a new album is in the works now. I’ll see you there!
It’s time for Wreck Room’s Queer weekly party KITTY. I hear it’s awesome!
Friday
Centotto hosts an opening for their latest show: Portfolio x Appunti: Zane Wilson. "It features walls and records being deflowered by fingers, an anchor suspended from the ceiling, a unicorn horn and, among other things, a rubber tree." Who doesn’t love that stuff? After party at The Narrows.
The opening recetion for Deliniate: photograhic portraits by Maryanne Ventrice at Fort Useless. Cool!
Flashpan Theater presents (a certain to be weird adaptation of) Twelfth Night, a personal Shakespeare fave at Surreal Estate. "The play journeys into the wasteland between parties in high winter, examining the joys and consequences of that whirlwind holiday season. Characters are thrown into love, violence, and strange new worlds as the band plays on." This Friday/Sat and next.
Cafe Orwell hosts Super Coda - and guess what…. they now serve wine & beer!
Music Music and more Music. Warm up inside one of our fabulous local venues. Check the Culture Calendar for specifics. Melissa’s got it all on lock.
Saturday
SUGAR is honored to present Visceral Logic "with Erika Keck and THROWHITE (Genevieve White and Zefrey Throwell). Tongue Slap, performance by THROWHITE, will begin at 8:00 sharp during the opening reception."
Other art events/openings: The Rabbit Room at Brewer’s Mansion and Jeremy Slater at Microscope Gallery.
Shea Stadium presents Winter Jam ‘11. I’m in.
NT, Stats and biggpigg play Brooklyn Fireproof and Lux Perpetua, Flower Orgy and Dropson play Silent Barn. (Both cost money, but did you read those band names?!)
Sunday
Celebrate with Cafe Orwell at their wine and beer license party and listen to Cuddle Magic & Very Fresh with a glass on them!
Movie night in the Northeast Kingdom Den. Tis the season!
Monday
3rd Ward is now offering cooking classes, e.g. The Noodle Bowl (a one-day workshop). They had me at "homemade carrot-daikon pickles."
Tandem hosts Comedyclipse, "a Bi-Monthly comedy show with Funny Fancy comedians."
Tuesday
Another chance to catch Nick Zedd films at Microscope Gallery.
Yoga at Surreal Estate and Lumenhouse.
Wednesday
Interactive options abound:
Blue in the Face Open Mic Comedy at GBM. Are we laughing the wintertime blahs away, team?
Pine Box Trivia Night! Meet your neighbors and kick their asses at random trivia.
Have a great week! I leave you with this awesome cover song/video by Bushwick local Pezzetino. She rocks and this video will make your day (and you may recognize some faces).
