It’s been a stay-at-home kind of week so far, but now it’s time to dig ourselves out & party. This week we kick things off with a photographer’s tour of the streets, a little Vonnegut-inspired original tunes, and plenty of live shows every night. Also a few choice New Year’s Eve options for you — all happening right here in the hood!
Thursday
Not quite ready to say goodbye to Christmas yet? You’re in luck — The 6th Day of Christmas is here! The Trinity Project musicians, parishioners of Most Holy Trinity-St. Mary’s Church, and the 8th grade students of Ss. Joseph and Dominic Catholic Academy and Friar Timothy are putting on a short program of traditional and experimental takes on Christmas standards. All proceeds ($5-$10 suggested donation) will help fund The Trinity Project’s art-and-community barter program (free or low-cost space in exchange for community service).
Friday
It’s on tonight, Bushwick. Check the calendar for the complete list, and here are a few highlights:
First up, and in true BK-style, we have Inverted Cosmos NYE 2011, a giant warehouse party featuring LA superstar Ariel Pink (#1 on the list!) in a special rare solo performance. With a long list of DJ sets going til 7 am, and plenty of laser light effects & visual projections, this is going to be huge.
Surreal Estate wants to take you on an Uptown Downtown NYE Jam: “Take a musical trip that spans the Zulu Nation run Hip Hop jams of the Bronx, down to the underground Dance and Rock venues of Manhattan’s Paradise Garage, Mudd Club, Funhouse, CBGBs and more.” This BYOB affair offers a complimentary champagne toast at midnight, a New York City Jacks House Dance Competition, and a rap battle. The $20 entry gets you all night access to 3 full floors!
Also tonight the Ridgewood Masonic Temple offers up their take on New Year’s Eve, with live sets by Titus Andronicus, Real Estate, Andrew Cedermark and Julian Lynch.
Saturday
Storefront Gallery kicks off 2011 with their latest: New Year, New Work, New Faces. From 1-3 pm take in a little brunch and celebrate the official opening of the new season. I was lucky enough to catch last week’s preview — there’s so much to celebrate & so much art to see!
It’s an all-ages hardcore night over at The Acheron, starring Seasick, The Men, and Salvation.
Sunday
For all interested in photography and/or Bushwick and/or meeting new people, there’s a Bushwick Photography Meetup happening this afternoon. The group will convene around 3pm at Maria Hernandez Park, and from there will hit the streets with the suggested theme of glass, steel, & concrete. All levels of experience welcome — so no excuses.
After a little sprucing up (new bathroom floor & industrial heater!) Silent Barn is ready to rock with a full line-up of stars: Data Dog, Rifle Recoil, Your Children is Beautiful, and dDiiLLiiAaNn, plus some new artwork by Rob Chabebe of EyeBodega.
Tuesday
The Bushwick Book Club is back at Goodbye Blue Monday. This month’s installment features music inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s God Bless You Mr. Rosewater, and stars Susan Hwang, Buffie Roseanne, Brook Pridemore and Andrew Vladeck. 8pm
