The entire region is paralyzed after a blizzard dumped up to 29 inches of snow and winds up to 70 miles per hour whipped it into drifts many feet high. Parts of Brooklyn report 24 inches of snow, with drifts as high as a person or more.

The National Weather Service recommends no travel at all due to continued white-out conditions. A blizzard warning is in effect until at least noon, but even if the snow stops falling strong winds are expected to last into the afternoon, with gusts up to 50 mph.

All flights are suspended out of all three major airports through at least 4pm.

The L train is down between Myrtle-Wyckoff and Broadway Junction stations, and the J train is suspended between Parsons Blvd and Broadway Junction. The M train is running again with normal service after a morning shutdown. The MTA warns that all service is subject to delays today.

Businesses aren’t taking a snow day, though — store owners are out shoveling for the next day of business. Carmen Valerio of Central Café considered not dealing with her snow-caked security gate, but her husband dug the shop out.

“I’m off of one job, but not the other,” said Valerio, co-owner of the café.

Fortunately, much of the snow should melt rather quickly due to higher temperatures and sunny weather over the next several days.
