The Death Set have kept a pretty low profile this year. Most of the shows they’ve played have been in the NYC area, and aside from a contribution to their label, Ninja Tune’s, 20th anniversary compilation, they haven’t had any releases. In all fairness to the Australian transplants, that’s still pretty productive considering their tragic death of their guitarist last year, and that they’ve been holed up in the studio working on their new album.
To tide over fans, the Death Set have a new mixtape avaialble for free download via Mishka. Artificially Sweetened combines some crazy sound bites — not just indie-rock-meets-hip-hop (but who doesn’t love B52′s mashed up with O.D.B.?), but Pee Wee Herman, Hunter S. Thompson, and Bill Hicks make their ways in as well.
In honor of the free mix tape, there is also a free release party for it tonight at the Cove in Williamsburg. The band is playing live, and there’s an open bar (in two 30-minute increments) and otherwise cheap drinks, plus DJ sets. Doors are at 10pm, 21+ only.
