Gospels‘s “Fractured” drags its listeners into a foreboding sea of syrup, and pulls them into its deep purple depths; only allowing the occasional penetration of its surface. And yet it’s not suffocating, almost like a dream underwater where you can still breathe. Its screwed down, elongated melody uses eerie synths and droning guitars to portray a dispiriting narrative and drowning ambience. Beneath this, a dirty South hip hop beat keeps the pace, tucked into the mix as a compliment, not a focal point. He calls it “shoegazey traphouse”, but it could easily fit with the witch house trend, a sound other Bushwick residents are also exploring. The accompanying lo-fi video of hazy dancefloors and strobe lights shining on projection-covered ravers fits the mood quite well.
This track is from his next album, Frames of Reference, available Nov. 15th on Hand Rolled Gold. You can also download a Gospels mixtape from a couple weeks ago, which is definitely some Halloween ish. But we like it all like that all year round.
