For Columbus Day — also known as “Indigenous People’s Day” in parts of California and not celebrated at all in Hawaii, Nevada and South Dakota — I asked residents of Bushwick, “What does it mean to be an American?” The question seemed to catch people off guard, and after some initial stuttering, garnered answers as varied as “freedom” and “opportunity” and even “all about money.”
