I’ve been updating the calendar for weeks now and am still amazed at how much goes on around here! It can be a tad daunting though when all those little boxes are packed in & overflowing, but here to help — as always — are THE PICKS. What would we do without our number one culture scout: Anna D’Agrosa?! She’s been a little busier than usual lately (coming soon!!!) so I’m gonna be pitching in & helping out. She’s taught me well, guys — do not worry!
Tonight
Thursday, surprisingly, is one of the quieter nights this week — up until 11 o’clock that is, when you’re gonna want to head over to Tandem Bar for "the hottest gay party ever in Bushwick!" That’s quite a claim and if anyone can make it happen it’s DJ Scot Bowman. There’s no charge to enter, drink specials all the way until 4 am, and three DJs so you can dance it up all night long. Tantrum + Dirty Pop! = One Fun Thursday Night! Get an early start to your weekend & GO!
Friday
We’ve got a wide variety of options for everyone’s favorite week/end night, all of which involve booze. I could not love you more, Bushwick!
There’s SO much to do at The Loom’s First Fridays I’d suggest you give yourself some extra time to explore. Better Than Jam‘s designers are offering special discounts, complimentary wine and refreshments, and a chance to make some new friends. Brooklyn Yarn Cafe has ice cream and slushies, and if you bring your own hooch they’ll mix it right in for you. A cold slushie boozy cocktail — – YUM! Next up is Tomahawk Salon for a fabulous manicure and/or a new ‘do. And for the more adventurous ones out there: get yourself a killer tattoo from Glamour Garage. And tons more! Looks like this is going to be a monthly event again so be sure keep those First Fridays open.
It’s premiere night at House of Yes for their latest Circus of Circus — A Tragic Tale of Entertainment: "a big-time, big-top musical of splendor and satire." Doors open at 8pm and tickets can be purchased either beforehand or at the door. They’ve got contortionists, aerialists, dancers, fire performers, and complimentary Goldsmith’s Whiskey. What a combo!
ISCP’s latest show There Has Been No Future, There Will be No Past opens this Friday, from 7-9 pm. It’s a rather large group show featuring artists from all over Central & Eastern Europe: "the exhibition emphasizes the network of intellectual exchanges that sustained its development, highlighting the fragmented complexity of an unpredictable group portrait." A network of intellectual exchanges with no future and no past? I’m in!
And you can’t complete a Friday evening without at least one bar trip, right? How about making it a Bodega night! It’s their monthly Noche de Flamenco.
Saturday
Catch up on some sleep Saturday morning, but before the day’s over make sure to drag yourself out of bed & over to one of Bushwick’s newest artist collectives, Regina Rex. In conjuction with their current exhibition Hand’s Tide (up until 10/17) they are hosting a vocal performance and string figure workshop from 3 to 5pm.
Move on over to Silent Barn for their Brutally Unfair Game Bash, an "exhibition of indie games by the Copenhagen Game Collective." There will be serious games, there will be silly games, there will be talks (about games), and even some live music. You can go early for potluck (5pm), and/or stay real late to party. Either way: you will play some games. (Maybe even this one!)
For all you performance lovers out there, the always-fun Bushwick Starr hosts Catch 41, a "multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary, rough and ready performance series-event." It’s not just a performance, people — it’s a performance event!
And for the music mavens: if you like it heavy, go to The Acheron for their metal extravaganza, featuring Liturgy, Kowloon Walled City, and Batillus. Or you can get your Bionic Boogie on (for free!) at Tandem.
Sunday
If you missed your chance to screen-print last Friday, stop that crying: Bushwick Print Lab is at it again this weekend! Sunday brings us opening day of Pattern Factory — Symbolic Architecture & Ornamental Repeats, where not only will you see some of Providence’s best print work, but you can leave with a fave image screen-printed on your clothes! How’s that for a Bushwick memento? Just be sure to wear or bring your own piece of fabric.
Next up Roberta‘s is hosting a Wine & Bread & Cheese party from 4 to 7pm in their beautiful backyard garden. They’ll be offering up a selection of fine wines, artisenal breads, and regional cheeses — – Some of the best in the city I’m sure! Buy your tickets now!
Monday
How about a little element of surprise to brighten up your Monday? Beauty Bar BK is hosting their weekly Monday Movie Nite! They like to keep us guessing, so check in here for movie deets.
Tuesday
It’s the first Tuesday of the month, which means Bushwick Book Club is here! This month’s theme is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Go listen to some of the best songwriters around & get yourself into the Halloween mood.
ISCP’s making a second appearance this week with their latest salon featuring Isabelle Cornaro from France and Alexandra Navratil from Zurich, Switzerland. Hellllo Culture!
Wednesday
We’ve got the usual cast of Wednesday night characters this week, and if you time it right you could conceivably hit all of ‘em: Vinyasa Power Flow Yoga is up first at Chez Bushwick, followed by some FREE knitting at Brooklyn Yarn Cafe, which only slightly overlaps with 3rd Ward’s infamous Drink n Draw. And then finish up your night with some super crazy fun Hissy Fit Karaoke at Tandem.
