Another summer week, another glorious, free show at South Street Seaport put on by the River to River Festival. This week’s lineup has three bands and is pretty interesting in its variety.
Not too much is known about opener The Witness Protection Programme, and it seems like they like it that way according to their mysterious bio. We do know the band features a Mr. Martin Clancey and is signed to Seaport’s own record label. Should be interesting.
Black Devil Disco Club are a rare find: two French librarians who started making disco music in 1978, way before downloading softsynths and filter plugins was a reality. Apparently their debut record was made in a small studio in the suburbs of Paris with little more than a synth, some tape loops, and a drummer. They haven’t played live in years (if ever) and their set is sure to feature electronic masterpiece “The Strange World of Bernard Fevre.” Definitely worth coming early for.
Headliners and DFA signees Yacht are joyous electronic popsters and pranksters, sure to be bouncing around the stage and getting the kids in a fuss. Main songwriter Jona Bechtolt has been joined by Claire Evans in what Bechtolt describes as a “media spanning life project.” I’m making sure I get a peak of whats going on behind the laptop.
There aren’t too many of these Seaport shows left this summer so make sure you get out there.
