The original version of this track came out in 2005, when Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings released their sophomore album, Naturally. And it was good as it was, full of soul and heartbreak. But when Ticklah got to it in late 2007 and flipped it on the reggae tip, he managed to successfully stomp on the adage, “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”
Of course, you can still cop the original. On Amazon, you can get it as a digital single, but if you pick up the 45, you get the instrumental too. The Ticklah remix 45 comes with a dub version on the flip (basically an instrumental, but with some added bits and effects). Everything was released by the hometown heroes, Daptone Records.
Jones, who just recently returned from a tour through Europe, will be performing at a free concert in Prospect Park, backed by the Bushwick Philharmonic, on Saturday, Aug. 7th, at 7PM.
