Avi Buffalo / Chad VanGaalen at Seaport

Tonight’s show, which is another chapter in the always great River to River Festival, is a West Coast, Sub-Pop repping double whammy. Chad VanGaalen, who many think should be headlining this show, comes on first at 7 pm, and his stage lineup and setup is really a mystery. His solo albums are filled with all sorts of instruments, many of which are home-made, and all of which are played by Chad himself. He’s toured with a variety of friends in the past, so it should be fun to see how his arty pop songs unravel.
Headliners Avi Buffalo have been getting tons of press recently based on their young age and their terrific self-titled debut album. Lead singer and songwriter Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg (that name is a mouthful) writes winding, delightful songs that go places you don’t expect, with guitar fretwork reminiscent of fellow West Coasters such as Isaac Brock and Doug Martsch. There’s definitely a Shins-y jangle tucked into the album as well. His lyrics are playful and evoke some great imagery, especially for those of us who are unlucky enough to be older than this band of 20 and 21-year olds.
Things have been great the past few weeks at Seaport, so get there early and enjoy the weather!
