Meet Steve. He owns Goodbye Blue Monday–a coffeehouse, performance space and a repository for “stuff” collected over the years. In the 80s, he owned Scrap Bar on Bleecker and MacDougal, where stars would misbehave and Hell’s Angels acted as security guards. He believes people seek validation, and his came from possibly the last link to the days of Ginsberg and Kerouac. At GBM, he recognizes that though it’s just “stuff,” people connect with these things and this place. He believes work doesn’t define him but rather, it’s the interpersonal relationships and how you treat others that really define who you are.

What a great guy. Steve was starting out GBM when I first moved over to that neighborhood. It seemed like such an unlikely place to start a club, but he knew what he was doing. Steve’s been so generous to the people in the neighborhood and all the musicians that get to come through and play at GBM. cheers.

Sejan, I LOVE this series of videographies. Each one truly captures what I love about our neighborhood–slowing down and getting to know our neighbors. Steve is the first neighbor you have interviewed that I already knew, and I was truly amazed at how much of his essence you captured so quickly. He’s so inspiring as a person, a business owner, a patron of art, and of storytelling. Thank you for knowing when to keep the camera rolling!

I wanted to add, to Traci and to others who have offered your time to watch and connect with these neighbors, I am so appreciative. It’s exactly this kind of engagement that prompts more stories. Thank you!
