Last week was good for catching stupid criminals in the 83rd. One beat a neighbor with a baseball bat and returned later to the victim’s house; a “helpful” man stole money from a neighbor while looking for his lost cat.

An alleged drug dealer was arrested Tuesday of last week for a June 6 baseball-bat beating of a Bushwick resident. Jason Velez, 25, believed that a 42-year-old man living on Stanhope Street near Knickerbocker Avenue had told the police that Velez was selling drugs in the area.

Velez, along with an unknown group of accomplices, confronted the Stanhope St. resident and struck him with a baseball bat, shattering his elbow. The group then proceeded to beat the man until he was unconscious.

Police picked up Velez when he returned to the victim’s home last Tuesday. He is charged with felony first-degree gang assault and remains on Rikers Island until his next court date in October. His bond has been set at $10,000. Velez’s accomplices in the attack are still at large.

A few blocks away in the same week, an Eldert Street man was arrested for stealing money from a neighbor. Around 2:30am on Wednesday, Angelo Garcia, 23, saw his neighbor looking for his lost cat. Garcia offered to help but when the neighbor bent over, Garcia took his wallet and removed $100. The victim called the cops and police from the 83rd Precinct arrested Garcia, who had a warrant for his arrest for a 2nd degree attempted robbery charge.

The New York Post reports that Garcia told cops that the neighbor, “gave me $100 to look for the cat.” Garcia was charged with 3rd degree felony grand larceny. The status of the cat remains unknown.
