This one’s been around for a minute now, but it’s made by a group called The Menahan Street Band, and is just so good that we had to post it. Besides, what’s wrong with older music anyway? The band, which uses hip hop, soul, and funk as a launching point, included “The Traitor” on their 2008 debut LP, Make The Road By Walking, which was recorded in an apartment on that very street. (They now record in Williamsburg, however.) Suspenseful guitar plucks and dark bass lines lay a foundation for some sweltering trumpets on this track, which has set the tone for many a beat. It was sampled for Kid Cudi’s “Mr. Solo Dolo”, Jay Z’s “American Gangster”, and 50 Cent’s “Talkin in Codes”. The band releases their music on Dunham Records, an imprint of Troutman’s own Daptone Records.
