Flax on the decks.Lauren Flax is a bit of a local star. Ask people in the area who makes music in Bushwick, and a good many will mention her name. Although she’s primarily a house deejay, she has a creatively diverse output. Her forays into disparate sound fringes often carry a touch of influence from the genre, but she always seems keen to think beyond convention.
Here we feature a recent remix of hers, which puts her stamp on a Brooklyn band called Men. It starts as a wistful recollection, written in an orchestral flair and set to an excited but restrained pulse. Soon, it explodes with a larger polyrhythmic beat into a more optimistic tone, albeit one still tempered with reservation. Eventually, it takes full flight with some soaring melodies, shedding all regret but not lessons learned, and rides out the rest of the seven minute track on variations of that theme.
Flax recently opened for Men with her drag side project, Creep. The drag genre resembles campfires of Youtube Vore videos, casting shadows of cyber squatters onto dark and shuttered horror glam urls. It’s a Gothic, screwed down version of trip hop, often produced to sound like it was made with salvaged hardware — although Creep is an exception to that last point.
A while back, we mentioned her remix of Telepathe, and we recommend you go check that out too.
