Summer weather calls for less clothing, and sometimes you get to see a lot more skin than you’d like — hot pants, crop tops, and halter tops galore… on grandmothers or mothers of four. Granted, if you’re hot enough to pull it off, nobody’s complaining.

Lady Yvette, Fashion Writer

Yvette brings us simple summer fashion — “tank top, flip flops, really nothing fancy” — with a serious injection of confidence and personal style. Attitude, at the end of the day, is the best fashion accessory. Only after close examination can we tell that a lot of money probably wasn’t spent on this outfit, but Yvette sells it to us for a million bucks.

What do you do for a living?
I’m a fashion writer as well, actually, for Signature Hits magazine. It just relaunched, since we’ve been around for a few years now but we’re switching things up a bit — it’s a young professional lifestyle magazine.

Do you live in Bushwick?
I’m on the border line of Bushwick and Bed-Stuy, I moved out here about six years ago from Milwaukee, Wisconsin — I meet a lot of people from Milwaukee out here surprisingly. Midwest, represent.

Do you have a go-to look?
One thing I do stress a lot, with any outfit, is that accessories make an outfit. No matter what you’re wearing, your accessories are key. I’m in love with platform heels, even though I’m wearing flats today, I usually love to wear heels whenever I can. I’m versatile with my style, so whatever I’m feeling that day. I love to dress up though.

You’re pretty tall already, and then with your hair, heels are quite the statement of confidence, is that…
My M.O.? [laughs] Exactly, yeah. [Plays with hair] This is my signature look now, it’s been a hit for a while so I have to stick with it. I usually like to switch it up, since I’m a bit of a chameleon… I’m also a model so I consider myself a muse.

Is there anything specific to your neighborhood that inspires your style?
Not necessarily, no. I’m gonna be honest — I don’t see much style in my neighborhood. I’m a city girl for that. I love to watch people in the streets and what they’re wearing. I go to SoHo and then to the magazines to get inspired, and then to the blogs.

What would you change about Bushwick?
The streets. Driving around here is terrible. Also, a Chase bank would be great. Some more businesses in the area — places where we can go out and hang out, you know. Sit out in a cafĂ© or whatever, there’s definitely not enough of that in this location, I think.
