The autumnal weather we’ve been having here in Brooklyn this week is quite fitting for the solid double bill tonight at Bowery Ballroom. Headliners Plants and Animals have grown up a bit since their first album, evolving into a harder-edged trio with fuzz guitar riffs lurking just beneath the surface. They cast their songs in a more interesting light than the average drums / bass / guitar setup, mostly due to lead singer Warren Spider’s emotive and expressive singing and the band’s knack for multi-part songs that manage to include more unique textures like harpsichord and lonesome slide guitar.
Openers Lost in the Trees are a North Carolina orchestral pop group led by Ari Picker that just signed to the prestigious Anti Records, and their sweeping string-augmented songs seem particularly suited to walking through an apple orchard on a windy fall afternoon, right when the leaves are starting to turn (maybe their name is more evocative than they realized). Make sure to get there early and catch their set.
