Underpass, by Daryl-Ann Saunders from the On The Platform series.

Daryl-Ann Saunders wants art in Bushwick to be as inclusive as possible.

“So many shows are in these cool spaces, which is great, but I thought it would be good to have one in a space with longtime roots in the community,” said the artist.

So she jumped at the chance to hold a visiting artist residency at Diana H. Jones Senior Center, which has been here for 41 years. She then planned and curated Urbanity, where she brought art to the residents of the center who
previously had never heard of Bushwick Open Studios. But holding the
event there also happened to provide a way for her to meet subjects for
her upcoming project, Pioneers of Bushwick.

Pioneers is a project that will pair photographs of locals who’ve been here for decades with their stories of the neighborhood. The artists in the Urbanity exhibit will be giving a talk at the center on Thursday, July 10th, from 1-2pm, and it will also be translated for Spanish speakers.
