At first glance, Ali Aschman’s work is very comforting. Her characters are non-threatening, almost child-like. And she often uses very soft color schemes. But this style only serves to slowly walk viewers into some very dark subject matter.
“People do terrible things to each other,” she says. “But violence is glamorized, and I don’t like that.”
Aschman works in a variety of forms. The scale can range from two story murals to small, business card-sized pieces; she explores multiple mediums, including the sculptural; and she constantly flouts the boundaries between art and design. But stylistically and thematically, it’s generally uniform in the juxtaposition of innocence and violence.
