As the weather drifts in limbo between cold breezes and the summer sun, neighborhood residents are slowly peeling off the stifling winter layers for more appropriate attire — sundresses, shorts, and the ever-controversial (in the fashion world, anyway) flip-flops. Though no matter how attractive a little bit of glistening skin can look on a humid day, mismatched layers always rock the top of my style Richter scale.

Anjia Jalac, Fashion Designer

As individual pieces laid out on a bed before getting dressed, Anjia’s outfit may have looked like a random handful from the Goodwill pile. But once meticulously placed layer upon layer, each individual item seamlessly blends together, turning each fragment into a whole urban-bohemian vignette with a charming lackadaisical air.

Do you live in Bushwick?
I’m from the Philippines but I grew up in New Jersey so New York is just a train ride for me.

What do you do for a living?
I’m actually a women’s wear designer — I have a line called Love, Anjia.

Are you wearing any of your own pieces now?
Yeah, this sweater-jacket thing with the stripes. It was a collaboration project which, in part, is why the fabrics are so mixed.

Other than your own design, what is your favorite part of the outfit you’re wearing today?
These pants! They’re my favorite pants and I got them at Daffy’s. I love Daffy’s!

Give me three words to describe your fashion sense.
Functional, flattering and, I dunno, weather-appropriate.

Do you participate in trends?
I think I like to pay attention, but the thing about trends is that you kinda have to come up with an original idea to use them. I mean, I like to keep a lookout, and if it’s something that I like for me, then yeah, I will go for it. But some things just don’t work for everyone.
