I received Light Pollution’s album Apparitions a few months ago and put in on a few times, but it never really clicked until today when I was forced to turn my stereo up to 26 (!!) to hear it over the noise of the water running in the sink and the renovation of the apartment next door.
And, somehow, this was the perfect listening environment to hear what’s been described as “swirling analog synths, shimmering arpeggios, and washed out tape noise… embedded into combinations of 90′s shoegaze, chillwave, and vocal psych-pop.” Ambitious, yes, and a few times the songs veer into forgettable territory. But the first half of the album, especially standout “Oh, Ivory,” sounds like it was made to be blasted from speakers hovering over the East River.
The band plays Glasslands this weekend for a Popgun party that has a great lineup: Tanlines, Keepaway, Memoryhouse, and Psychobuildings (a new band featuring a member of BBK fave Small Black) will all be joining Light Pollution. The Popgun guys do a consistently great job booking shows with cohesive lineups of up-and-comers, and this is one of their best. Way to go.
