people who are living illegally – wether loft dwellers or immigrants – might not want to make a point of officially reporting they are living illegally.

re: loft dwellers – on one had if illegal loft dwellers have high return, it could aid them in gaining some sort of legal status (thinking soho loft law for bk) or it could draw the city’s attention leaving quite a few people looking for a new home. but this leads to a larger discussion about illegal lofts.

@Mehpster I agree. That’s why I think it’s just ageism. Or some other classicism. It reminds me of the general belief in the South that everyone ELSE is a “redneck.”

I wish everyone would stop talking about “hipsters.” A lot of us are just random youngish whiteish folks who have dayjobs and do things other than “make art” (although we may attend such things). But still hate “upscale”/”yuppie” whatnot. I guess we don’t exist, though.

I live in a live/work in the eye of that morgan avenue no-show storm. i work off the books, no census came to me in the mail, i have no landline to get calls on, and no one’s walking around passing it out on the streets. I think that’s probably what’s affecting the data around here.

This is great reporting and excellent pushback against both NPR and Washington-based media as well as the rampant ageism that is at the heart of anti-hipster bias. (Those shiftless kids!)

I don’t think enough has been made for how the Census helps immigrants of all stripes. The Census counts everyone without prejudice per the constitution. In fact, beyond just voting, funding and those various federal benefits, the Census is a perfectly legal way to prove residency for extended period of time should there be any path to citizenship for theu ndocumented immigrants in our communities.
