Before spring began its battering rainfall, I spotted these two transplants having a makeshift picnic down the street from their apartment in the McKibbin Lofts. Alright, so these girls look like your average hipster at first glance — but as I walked by, it was obvious to me that they were European, so I figured I’d stop to chat to figure out how I knew.
Christina from Germany, Tourist (left) & Julie from France, Au Pair (right)
Christina and Julie have a similar thing going on — vintage boots with textured tights, topped off with layers of oversized garments from the waist up, focused deeply on the use of black. Christina’s look, however, manages to be a bit more bold with a striking green canvas duffel, purple Golden Girls worthy windbreaker, and straw colored leather mock cowboys. Julie sticks to her French roots with classic black and white. Both girls find a perfect balance between the I-just-rolled-out-of-bed look and a certain precision that gives away the fact that their passports have been newly stamped.
What brings you to Bushwick?
Christina: Curiosity. I’ve been here for a month. I came as a tourist and just extended my stay. I was lucky because British Airways went on strike so I could push back my ticket for free. I’m into photography, fashion, and drawing, stuff like that, and this is a good place to get inspired. That sounds like a stereotype, but it’s true, so…
Julie: Yeah, curiosity… and beauty. Just living in the moment. I used to live in the city as an au pair and I just decided to get my own place.
You think this neighborhood is beautiful?
J: Yes, definitely — especially this part of Brooklyn. I just think the people are willing to be different, but not in a stereotypical kind of way.
C: Everyone seems to find the beauty in themselves here. And the buildings are cool.
How would you guys describe your style?
J: Just following my eye, I guess. I try to keep a little bit of the French style, because I’m proud of who I am and where I’m from, and mix that with New York style. French style is a little more conservative — we’ve seen trench coats for ages now, and stripes. But if you mix it with New York craziness, I think it looks nice.
How about you, Christina, where’d you get your jacket?
C: The jacket is Beacon’s Closet. Most of the things I wear are from the thrift shop. It just has to be fun. I decide everyday who I get to be that day.
What’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought when it comes to clothes?
C: A Stella McCartney raincoat that I don’t have here with me, unfortunately.
J: It would have to be American Apparel leggings that I bought for $42, that’s just crazy. I really like cheap stuff because my tastes change all the time so I don’t want to spend too much money on that stuff, but I wear these leggings a lot even though they were expensive. I guess it’s worth it, but still pretty crazy for leggings.

Euros in Bushwick are the worst.
Yep you got that correct, consider the author of this article.
I’m pretty sure this is the same person that did a piece for another media outlet wile back, she showed up looking like a hootchee momma.
We thought we were being solicited when she came through the door.
I cant stand Eurotrash, they just want to see America, be annoying, piss all over it then leave.
I have 2 building’s and refuse to rent to them no matter how much $$ they flash up front.
—no way
I’m not anti hipster, I actually have a couple talented artists working for me doing restoration work, I’m just anti asshole. Some of these useless people and free loaders need stop being invited here and to go home.
It leaves more opportunity for the folks who really trying to make it in this economy.
I have kids in my building getting up for work 7AM when these some of these Eurotrash bums are still walking around drunk making noise outside.
Julie April 10th, 2010 at 1:56 pm
There always be assholes to make generalities without taking one second to try to know what they are actually talking about. All euros in the same basket ? That’s why most of people around the world hate americans, stop being racist and conservatives, be glad there is still open minded and curious foreigners who wants to learn about the states, live/work in this country.
I work 50h/week, don’t tell me I’m useless.
You obviously need to book some flights, to move your ass from your comfortable tight opinions and to see how the rest of the world is.

What bunch of crap’ola Julie !
If it weren’t for 9,387 American lives France would be flying the German flag and you wouldn’t be here or been born !
If it weren’t for technology developed in the United States France wouldn’t have Airbus, you prized Ariane space rockete and “Le tunnel sue la Munchie” Whatever you call it
You work 50 hours a week as a live in babysitter because
1-you like it here
2-like most Euros you don’t want real jobs “party party party” and are accustomed to free French government subsidized places to live.
3-Odds are like most immigrants If you stay here you wont be able to support yourself and will be soon drop an anchor baby and start demanding services footed by ME the taxpayer.
–I could be wrong, I don’t know you
Buy a ticket and see the world ?
I been to over 15 different country’s fought in 1 war before you were likely born.
France and Canada were hands down the 2 worst dens of socialists, journalists and leftest wing-nuts I ever encountered.
Tell ya a story:
In Canada a cop stopped the train to call for backup and arrested us for saying “look at those 2 fruitcakes” (These 2 drunk guys were making a scene almost sodomizing each other in the train in front of everybody) including children, No class whatsoever ! –yet the cops arrest us over a comment people in the seat behind us overheard ?
That’s exactly how the Russian KGB operated.
Unlike France and Canada we have something called The United States Constitution, It guarantees us to the and right to free speech, bare arms and a host of other things you euros seem to hate.
Being French you may really like Boston or Berkley Ca.
It really nice this time of year
